Planning for Drew Park expansion to kick off with Green Valley open house

An open house about a planned expansion to Green Valley’s Drew Park is happening next week.

Part of a long-anticipated project to create a new Drew Park Master Plan, the event will let community members provide input and learn more about the future of the recreation area at 2310 S. Kenmore Street, between John Robinson, Jr. Town Square and Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School.

The $2.2 million undertaking will unite existing facilities with land acquired from the YMCA, Arlington Public Schools and a duplex demolished in August, according to a county webpage.

“Over the next several months, the County will work with the community to develop a plan that reflects local priorities and helps shape Drew Park as a welcoming, accessible, and vibrant neighborhood destination,” the page says.

The master planning process aims to achieve the following.

  • Assess existing amenities and explore new public space uses
  • Improve safe pedestrian access into and through the park
  • Address changes in elevation across the site
  • Create pedestrian-friendly connections to the surrounding neighborhood

Next week’s engagement effort will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Drew Community Center (3500 23rd Street S.).

County staff will begin to collect more feedback on draft concepts this winter, followed by a final draft concept in the spring and a County Board vote next summer or fall. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 and last through 2029, according to the Fiscal Year 2025-2034 Capital Improvement Plan.

Once the expansion is complete, the capital improvement plan anticipates about $13,000 per year in upkeep costs.
