Arlington’s snowplow naming contest returns, seeking fresh puns

As the days get chillier, Arlington County is looking for a new flurry of winter wit to name its fleet of brine trucks and snowplows.

The “Name that Plow!” competition — which produced more than 1,200 responses in 2024 — is back for its second year, seeking out punchy suggestions for the 60 names that will appear on the county’s snow and ice map if Arlington gets more than two inches of snow.

“The community is invited to suggest fun, memorable names for Arlington’s snowplow and salt truck fleet,” the county said in an announcement. “Inspiration can come from the winter season, song/book/film/television titles, art, sports or any witty take on life in Arlington.”

Last year’s suggestions resulted in dozens of memorable names, from Saline Dion and Taylor Drift to Plowy McPlowface and Mr. Plow.

People can submit up to five names in this year’s competition, which runs through Sunday, Nov. 30. Respondents are reminded to keep names “fun and respectful” and “avoid any suggestions that could be considered offensive, political or inappropriate.”
