JUST IN: ‘Large water main break’ in Pentagon City causing traffic, service impacts

County crews are working to repair a “large water main break” in Pentagon City.

The break happened this morning near the intersection of S. Hayes Street and 15th Street S., resulting in a partial road closure and some 100 units in a high-rise building to lose water pressure.

Repairs to the 12-inch water main are underway and expected to take until midnight tonight, according to the Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services.

“The street is partially closed, with traffic being diverted,” DES said.

Photos from around 11 a.m. show water bubbling up from the sidewalk and pooling in the roadway, a block from the mall and from Costco.

Separately, a six-inch water main break in the Arlington Ridge neighborhood, near Pentagon City, has resulted in the closure of S. Arlington Ridge Road, according to DES.

Repairs on that ruptured water main are expected to take until around 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, another break in an eight-inch water main further down S. Arlington Ridge Road, closer to Alexandria, has resulted in a partial road closure, DES said around 2:40 p.m.
