Sleet piles up on snow in Arlington, likely affecting Monday commutes

Heavy sleet has continued throughout the afternoon in Arlington, bringing total accumulation up to over half a foot.

The National Weather Service warned of impacts on morning commutes in an update this afternoon, advising that “travel could be nearly impossible” as a result of the sleet, snow and possible freezing rain later today. ARLnow measured 7 inches of snow and sleet in North Arlington as of 2 p.m.

Metrorail will operate on a weekend schedule tomorrow (Monday), and all but 14 Metrobus routes have been temporarily suspended. Arlington Transit suspended all bus service this morning.

School is canceled tomorrow at Arlington Public Schools. George Mason University has announced that it will also be closed for the weather, joining Marymount University.

While some Arlington restaurants are likewise shuttered, others are open and some have been offering snow day specials.

Traffic camera footage this afternoon shows mostly empty streets throughout the county after hazardous conditions led to a county vehicle crashing into a house on S. Glebe Road this morning.

Some freezing rain was falling in southern Maryland as of around 2:30 p.m., but the Capital Weather Gang is mostly forecasting waves of moderate to heavy sleet until precipitation winds down around 7-10 p.m.

Residents are advised to shovel sidewalks early and often, in part because sleet is much denser than snow.

Meanwhile, VHC Health is asking for volunteers with a valid driver’s license and a four-wheel drive vehicle to help transport staff members to and from work.

“If your readers have a reliable four-wheel drive vehicle, feel comfortable driving in winter conditions, and are willing to assist, we’d greatly appreciate their assistance and encourage them to call 703.558.5000,” a spokesperson told ARLnow.

Arlington residents can keep track of which roads have been cleared on the county’s live snow activity map.
