JUST IN: Arlington Public Schools closed, trash collection canceled Wednesday

Arlington Public Schools students will have a third consecutive snow day tomorrow (Wednesday) and no waste collection will take place as icy conditions continue.

“Freezing temperatures and icy roads, parking lots and sidewalks continue to make travel unsafe,” APS said in an announcement this afternoon. “Student and staff safety remains our top priority.”

Schools and offices were closed today and yesterday following heavy snow and sleet over the weekend. Students will also be off on Friday, a scheduled grade preparation day for APS.

Waste collection, meanwhile, has been canceled tomorrow, Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services announced this afternoon. As with Monday and Tuesday’s canceled collection service, there will be no make-up runs this week.

Arlington is currently in Phase 3 of the snow removal effort, with crews tackling icy accumulation on neighborhood streets that have seen little treatment since Sunday’s winter storm.

The complete APS announcement is below.

CODE 1: All APS schools and offices will be closed tomorrow, Wed, Jan. 28, 2026. Freezing temperatures and icy roads, parking lots and sidewalks continue to make travel unsafe. Student and staff safety remains our top priority.

Unless otherwise directed by their supervisors, custodial, maintenance and essential transportation staff should report to work at their scheduled time. All activities in schools and on school grounds remain canceled. For updates about Pool Operations, go to www.apsva.us/aquatics.
