A small mountain of snow and ice has risen over one block of 14th Street N. in Courthouse as large-scale clearing efforts continue around Arlington.
County crews have hauled over 2,500 truckloads of icy debris, which some are calling “snowcrete” because of its density and how difficult it is to remove it, since this weekend’s storm.
Some of it has gone to a stretch of 14th Street N. between N. Courthouse Road and N. Uhle Street, next to Ragtime and the large Courthouse parking lot. This was filled in within less than 18 hours, according to the county.
The berm loomed over the head of a county representative in a video posted to social media on Wednesday night.
“The Arlington County snow crew continues to work around the clock with a focus on maintaining critical infrastructure and improving pedestrian safety,” the representative said.
Hauling snow and handling hurdles—Arlington County is on it! ❄️
Our Snow Crew and support teams continue to work around the clock, but the unique combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain – and consistent refreezing – has made progress slow and difficult on some streets. pic.twitter.com/AJ4z9vuwNv— Arlington County (@ArlingtonVA) January 29, 2026
Teams now on their 12th consecutive 12-hour shift are continuing to haul and melt snow from commercial corridors during the final phase of snow removal.
“Crews are making steady progress working on cleanup of primary/secondary streets with a focus on remaining residential streets (particularly small/narrow streets). Sidewalks, bridges and protected bike lanes continue to be cleared,” the county wrote on X yesterday afternoon (Thursday).
Though Northern Virginia is expected to dodge a snowstorm that is on track to hit southern portions of the commonwealth this weekend, frosty temperatures remain in the forecast.
The National Weather Service anticipates a high near 20 today and wind chills as low as -8. It’s not expected to get above freezing until early next week.
