The Yorktown Patriots boys varsity squad (14-4, 7-1) routed the visiting Herndon Hornets, 74-33, on Jan. 30 for its fourth straight win.
The Patriots remain tied for the Liberty District lead with the Marshall Statesmen.
Teams were playing without having practiced for six days because of poor weather and cancelled classes.
“Our last practice was last Saturday,” Yorktown coach Joe Keimig said about playing Herndon.
Despite the lack of preparation, the Yorktown boys started well against Herndon, taking a quick 7-0 lead. The Patriots led throughout en route to the lopsided victory.
Sam Roosa was Yorktown’s leading scorer with 17 points. Garrett Schmelling added 13 and Jake Coulam scored 12 with seven assists.
The three compiled those stats primarily during the first three quarters. With Yorktown ahead by 30 points, 59-29, entering the final period, the starters played little in that stanza.
Yorktown and the Statesmen (6-1) are tied for first in the loss column. The Patriots lost to Marshall, 45-38, when the teams met earlier this season. The two are scheduled to play again at Marshall on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Yorktown finished first in the regular season last season, while Marshall came in second. The Patriots’ overall regular-season district record entering this week’s play is 18-2 over two seasons.
W-L girls fall to Langley, sit in second place: In Jan. 30 girls action, the Washington-Liberty Generals also played at home, losing to the Langley Saxons, 47-42.
A victory would have tied W-L for first with Langley. The game’s result left the Generals (14-4 overall) tied for second place in the loss column with a 6-2 league mark, while Langley was 8-0.
The Saxons also defeated W-L by a similar 49-41 score earlier this season.
In Washington-Liberty’s Jan. 30 loss to Langley, the Generals won the opening tip and took a 3-0 lead. The lead seesawed until Langley’s 12-0 run starting early in the second quarter gave the Saxons the lead for good.
Langley led by 12 at halftime. The Generals rallied behind strong defense to pull within three points on a number of occasions, but could not overcome turnovers and poor shooting from the floor.
Washington-Liberty had 23 turnovers, including eight in the fourth quarter. The Generals shot just 32% from the floor for the game, and only 20% in the first half.
The Saxons also struggled with turnovers in the final period with seven, but made enough foul shots (seven) to maintain the lead.
Anna Jungman was Washington-Liberty’s leading scorer. She scored 12, including a trio of three-point plays. Jungman also had six rebounds, five steals, three assists and a blocked shot.
Riley Krohl made three three-point shots and scored nine. Eve Jungman had six points, nine rebounds, two steals and a block; Kathryn Wagener scored four with three assists; Dylan Plummer scored four off the bench; and Hannah Kelley made a three-pointer for her points.
Washington-Liberty is scheduled to host Marshall on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Washington-Liberty and Langley could possibly meet a third time in the upcoming district tournament in a couple of weeks. Langley defeated W-L in last season’s district-tournament championship game.
