Lunar New Year celebrations begin this week in Arlington and Falls Church

An earlier version of this story indicated the Rosslyn Lunar New Year Celebration was happening on Feb. 19, but the event has been rescheduled to Feb. 25.

Festivals and other events in celebration of Lunar New Year are coming to Arlington and Falls Church starting this week, kicking off the Year of the Horse.

Lunar New Year officially begins on Tuesday, Feb. 17, but some festivities are happening before then. The holiday is celebrated in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and numerous other Asian cultures, marking the start of the 15-day Spring Festival.

Here are the upcoming Lunar New Year events around Arlington and Falls Church:

GMU Lunar New Year

Thursday, Feb. 5, 4-7:30 p.m.

This Lunar New Year celebration at George Mason University’s Arlington campus will feature food, games, activities and performances by the GMU Vietnamese Students Association. Food will be limited.

FUSE at Mason Square, 3401 Fairfax Drive (first floor, Rooms 1311 and 1312)

Lunar New Year Celebration at Fashion Centre at Pentagon City

Saturday, Feb. 7, 1-5 p.m.

The 10th annual celebration in the dining pavilion on the Metro level will bring various traditional music and dance performances, shopping opportunities, cultural activities and more. The event will be held in partnership with the Asian American Chamber of Commerce.

Lunar New Year Craft at Central Library

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 4:15-5 p.m.

Children can celebrate Lunar New Year with Year of the Horse crafts. All materials will be provided by the library.

Eden Center Lunar New Year Celebrations

Saturday, Feb. 14, Tuesday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 21

The Eden Center hosts a Vietnamese Tết Lunar New Year Celebration each year. The shopping center will offer free face painting, balloon twisting and caricatures across three days starting at noon. On Feb. 17, there will be a community flag ceremony and giveaways as well. Lion dances will be held on Feb. 17 and Feb. 21.

NUE: Elegantly Vietnamese Lunar New Year Celebration

Throughout Lunar New Year, Tuesday, Feb. 17 through Tuesday, March 3

NUE’s celebration will include Year of the Horse drink specials in collaboration with local artists, plus the tradition of red “li xi” envelopes filled with lucky money. With a $250 dine-in purchase, guests can join the li xi experience through the restaurant’s own animal dice game, with prizes like an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Vietnam or Las Vegas.

Rosslyn Lunar New Year Celebration

Thursday, Feb. 25, 5-7 p.m.

The Rosslyn BID will host this family-friendly Year of the Horse event. Highlights will include a lion dance performance at 6 p.m. by the Hung Ci Lion Dance Troupe, tea from Upside on Moore and other local vendors, zodiac animals, a wishing tree, children’s activities and photo souvenirs.
