APS students plan walkout in protest of ICE next week

A walkout in protest of immigration enforcement is in the works next week at several Arlington Public Schools facilities.

It’s unclear how large or widespread it will be, although tipsters have said action is planned at all major high schools in Arlington on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m., as well as some middle schools at a later time that afternoon.

A similar walkout in Alexandria last week involved around 250 to 300 students, who left both campuses of Alexandria City High School last Friday in protest of ICE.

An Instagram account associated with the walkout in Arlington posted photos of signs made at H-B Woodlawn yesterday (Wednesday).

The event is described as an “APS anti-ICE school walkout.” The Instagram page lists instances of people who died in custody or in interactions with immigration officers since the start of this year, including Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

Walkouts aren’t terribly uncommon at APS, although there hasn’t been a heavily publicized one in a couple years. Previous walkouts have focused on issues such as reproductive rights, transgender students’ rights and sexual harassment and assault.
