Virginia’s two U.S. senators have endorsed Rep. Don Beyer (D) in his bid for reelection in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District.
Senators Mark Warner (D) and Tim Kaine (D) both announced their support for Beyer yesterday (Wednesday), according to a press release from Beyer’s campaign.
“Don and I have worked side by side for years to deliver results for Virginians and ensure their voices are heard in Washington,” Warner said. “He has been a strong and principled ally in the fight to protect our federal workers and conduct the oversight needed to hold the Trump Administration accountable.”
Warner also cited their joint work on growing Virginia’s economy, modernizing infrastructure, advancing new technologies, and responding to the midair collision at DCA.
Kaine called Beyer “a trusted friend and colleague” and “a key partner in our efforts to halt this president’s tariffs and to restore Congress’ authority over war powers.”
“I’ve been especially proud to work alongside Don to protect federal workers and our economy from the Trump Administration, and to support and strengthen opportunities for our servicemembers, veterans, and military families,” Kaine said.
Beyer announced his reelection campaign last June. He serves as the senior House Democrat on Congress’s Joint Economic Committee and sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over health care, trade, tax policy, Social Security, and Medicare.
He faces several challengers in the Democratic primary, along with questions about his age — Beyer turns 76 in June — from opponents who say the party needs new leadership.
The race is also complicated by a possible redistricting shakeup. Virginia’s proposed new congressional map, designed to benefit Democrats in response to Republican-led mid-decade redistricting in other states, would split Arlington’s representation and extend the 8th District as far south as York County. The plan is still awaiting court action and a voter referendum.
