Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) is co-leading a bipartisan bill aimed at giving parents more tools to protect their children on social media.

Warner introduced “Sammy’s Law” today (Monday) alongside Sens. Jon Husted (R-OH) and Katie Britt (R-AL). The legislation would require large social media platforms — those with at least 100 million monthly active users or $1 billion in annual gross revenue — to work with independent safety software providers that can help families monitor children’s accounts, according to the bill text.

Arlington’s congressman and both of Virginia’s U.S. senators condemned today’s military strikes on Iran, calling the attack unconstitutional and demanding that Congress reconvene.

The U.S. and Israel launched a major attack on Iran overnight, with strikes hitting areas across the country including around the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. President Donald Trump, in a video announcing “major combat operations,” called on Iranians to “seize control of your destiny” by rising up against their government.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is voting on the first steps to end the 40-day government shutdown Sunday after a group of moderate Democrats agreed to proceed without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies, angering many in their caucus who wanted to continue the fight.

The group of three former governors — New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan and Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine — said they would vote to reopen if the Senate passed three annual spending bills and extend the rest of government funding until late January. Senate Majority Leader John Thune endorsed the deal Sunday night and called an immediate vote to begin the process of approving it.

Arlington’s top prosecutor is voicing opposition to a bill that would broaden requirements for federal law enforcement to detain undocumented suspects.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti issued a statement today (Thursday) arguing that mandating detention of people charged, arrested or convicted for theft-related crimes under the Laken Riley Act would run contrary to public safety interests.
