Update at 10:25 p.m. — The bridge and the lanes have reopened.
Earlier: Northbound S. George Mason Drive is closed between S. Columbus Street and Four Mile Run Drive due to an outside fire.
A fire broke out under a bridge that runs over Four Mile Run earlier this evening, prompting a fire department response. Firefighters then requested police to the scene, around 6:30 p.m., before announcing an extended closure of the bridge.
The northbound lanes of George Mason “will remain shut down until a building engineer can assess damage caused by a fire in a homeless encampment under the bridge,” an Arlington County Fire Department spokesman said. “There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters. Fire Marshals are currently on scene investigating.”
