The Container Store in Clarendon is selling off a large portion of its merchandise in preparation for a “mashup” with Bed Bath & Beyond.
The business at 2800 Clarendon Blvd is one of 98 stores nationwide transitioning to a new “Container Store + Bed Bath & Beyond” format, integrating a wider range of home goods. Bed Bath & Beyond announced plans to acquire the other chain earlier this month.
As the Clarendon store prepares for the overhaul, many of its organization and storage products are selling at 30% markdowns in an “almost everything must go” sale. According to store signage, more than 1,400 items are affected as Bed Bath & Beyond makes way for new products later this year.
“Beginning in May, the identified locations are expected to transition over the following months to The Container Store + Bed Bath & Beyond format, representing the Company’s future operating model,” according to a Bed Bath & Beyond press release. “The reimagined stores will combine The Container Store’s organizing solutions, in-home services and expertise with an expanded home assortment and complementary offerings from Bed Bath & Beyond.”
At just under 30,000 square feet, the two-level Clarendon shop is joined in the transition by other Northern Virginia locations in Reston, Springfield, Vienna and Ashburn.
Bed Bath & Beyond previously had an Arlington location at Pentagon Row, but it shuttered in 2020.
