Bicyclist hurt in collision with sprinting deer on W&OD Trail

A bicyclist took a tumble over the weekend after a white-tailed deer crashed into her at full speed on the W&OD Trail.

The unusual cyclist-deer collision took place around 11:30 a.m. Saturday near the N. Ohio Street overpass in the Madison Manor neighborhood, according to scanner chatter.

The animal slammed into the woman’s left leg and hurled her off the trail, where she happened to land in a patch of deer-tongue grass, Jo Allen, co-steward of Madison Manor Park, told ARLnow.

“The antler-less deer bounded across Four Mile Run, continuing its westward trek, following the collision,” Allen said. “Its hoof prints were visible in the asphalt trail for several minutes after the crash.”

A group of park stewards clearing debris in Four Mile Run assisted the cyclist as she awaited medical assistance. Her biking helmet was dented and she reported pain in her leg, Allen said.

“Of all the things to look out for on this trail, I had never thought about a deer,” one bicyclist reportedly said while stopping to offer help.

The woman was treated at the scene and declined transport to the hospital, Capt. Jamie Jill, spokesperson for the Arlington County Fire Department, told ARLnow.
