Police and firefighters from the county’s bomb squad are on scene at Wakefield High School after a reported threat.
First responders — including bomb-sniffing dogs — were dispatched to the school around 3:45 p.m., after school dismissal, for an unspecified threat that prompted school officials to initiate security procedures.
Arlington Public School confirmed the investigation in a statement, below, sent to ARLnow.
Wakefield High School received a telephone threat at approximately 3:43 p.m. today, after student dismissal.
Out of an abundance of caution, Arlington Public Schools immediately placed the school in a Secure-the-Building status and notified the Arlington County Police Department and Arlington County Fire Department. Law enforcement and emergency personnel are currently investigating the credibility of the threat.
At the time the threat was received, the regular school day had concluded. Students and staff who remained on campus for after-school activities were directed to remain inside the building while the investigation is underway.
The safety and security of students and staff remain APS’ highest priority. APS is working closely with law enforcement and will continue to provide updates as appropriate.
“Please do not come to the school at this time, as access to the campus is restricted during the investigation,” APS told Wakefield families via email. “We will provide an update as soon as additional information becomes available.”
