A portion of a busy roundabout on Military Road is closed until early next week due to “unforeseen” construction issues.
Detours to “give crews room to build the roundabout structure” have been in effect since Oct. 12, and they’re expected to continue through Sunday, Oct. 25.
The roundabout is closed to eastbound traffic from Military Road to Nelly Custis Drive, and to southbound traffic from Nelly Custis Drive to Military Road. An all-way stop is also in effect at Nelly Custis Drive and Lorcom Lane.
“Due to unforeseen restriction of space at the Military Road Roundabout, the project team needs to close a portion of the intersection of Military Road and Nelly Custis Drive,” a project page says.

The roundabout, which normally carries about 11,000 vehicles per day, remains open to northbound traffic from Nelly Custis Drive onto Military Road and to southbound traffic from Military Road continuing on Military Road.
The closures have resulted in detours for school buses and ART Bus 56.
The construction project is installing a permanent roundabout at the intersection, following up on temporary changes in 2021. Changes include widening sidewalks, upgrading utilities and installing a rain garden at the center.
The project is expected to last through summer 2027.
