After 14 years in business, the Crystal City Wine Shop is closing down at the end of the month.
A sign in a storefront window indicates that Saturday, Oct. 31, will be the last day of operation for the business that has offered gourmet wine and beer, with a special emphasis on Virginia wines, since 2012.
“It is with both gratitude & a heavy heart that we announce we will be closing our doors for the final time on October 31st,” the sign says. “Thank you for 14 memorable & joyful years. Your support, friendship, and patronage have meant the world to us and we are deeply grateful to have been part of this wonderful community.”
Store representatives could not be reached for comment about the decision to close.
Crystal City Wine Shop opened in March 2012 under the ownership of the nonprofit Washington Wine Academy.
At the time, Alex Evans, the academy’s director of education, said the store was conceived after attendees at academy-run events — like the Crystal City 1K Wine Walk — started asking where they could buy some of the unique wines they were tasting.
It was the only gourmet wine shop in Crystal City at the time, but the area has changed substantially in the last 14 years. Flight Wine Shop opened at 269 19th Court S. in March 2025, while Beauty Champagne & Sugar Boutique opened on Restaurant Row in 2022.
