National Pupusa Day celebration coming to Columbia Pike this weekend

The Arlington Sister City Association is celebrating National Pupusa Day this weekend with a celebration of Salvadoran culture on Columbia Pike.

The association’s San Miguel Committee will host a celebration from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday at Abi’s Azteca Grill, a Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant at 3005 Columbia Pike that is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The event will feature a DJ, trivia and traditional Salvadoran folklore dancing.

“El Salvador and pupusas, they go hand in hand,” said Lily Caballero-Torres, president of the San Miguel Committee and a Salvadoran immigrant.

Daphne Lathouras, chair of the board of directors of the Sister City Association, said the event will help build awareness and appreciation of Salvadoran culture.

“Sister Cities is all about connecting people across cultures and building relationships. We believe that getting to know one another as individuals — sharing our traditions, experiences, and stories — is what brings people and the world closer together,” she said.

Lathouras has been going to Abi’s for about 30 years and regularly gets pupusas there.

“I often take friends out to try pupusas, and I’m always surprised by how many people have never had one,” she said. “Tacos have become so popular, and I think pupusas deserve that same recognition! I’m looking forward to sharing them with more people.”

San Miguel, El Salvador, is one of Arlington’s four sister cities. The others are Aachen, Germany; Reims, France; and Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.
