I love Burgundy. And this one checks all the boxes and more. It’s “Extremely Well-Made” and “Super Affordable.” Rarely, when talking about Burgundy, are these two phrases used in the same sentence.

Introducing the 2022 Domaine Billard Pére et Fils Santenay “Les Hâtes.” This “Single Vineyard” Red Burgundy is a great find (at as low as $29.99). It’s 2022, so it drinks well out of the gate, rich and accessible yet still mineral and very Burgundian. It is a rare find indeed! As you can imagine, there isn’t much of this wine available.

The 2022 Domaine Billard Pére et Fils Santenay “Les Hâtes” is a wine of unique qualities. It’s aromatic, supple, elegant, and pure. This estate-bottled, barrel-aged wine comes from a single-vineyard, a small plot of 50+ year-old vines, ‘Les Hâtes’ Lieu Dit of Santenay, the Côte de Beaune’s southernmost village. Its exceptional location, nestled between two prestigious Santenay Premiere Cru Vineyards, ‘Beaurepaire 1er Cru’ and ‘Clos des Mouches 1er Cru,’ adds to its allure.

Jérôme Billard, a passionate winemaker, took over the Billard Pére et Fils estate from his father and revolutionized the winemaking process. He implemented organic viticulture, built a winery in the village of La Roche Pot, and started vinifying and bottling wine rather than selling grapes to others.

Here’s How It Tastes

When you sip the 2022 Domaine Billard Pére et Fils Santenay “Les Hâtes” you’ll be greeted by a beautiful cherry red hue, a testament to its pure fruit — the perfumed aromas of rose petals, violets, red berries, and currants. The palate is fresh, with layered complexity. Look for upfront flavors of raspberries and cherries, then hint delicate herb and spice notes on the long, velvety finish. This wine, with a bit of air, is a delight to drink now.

Thank you for taking the time to read about this Burgundy find. It’s a fraction of the price of comparable bottles.
