The future of a judicial and public services agreement between Arlington and Falls Church is on tonight’s Arlington County Board agenda.

The Board will weigh the renewal of the agreement, which outlines how the jurisdictions use and share the costs of the county’s Emergency Communications Center, certain judicial offices and other items.

Under the terms of the agreement, the jurisdictions share the use of and the City of Falls Church pays a “proportional share” of the expenses for:

  • Arlington’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, including the Probation Office and certain community programs
  • Arlington’s Argus House, a community-based group home for at-risk boys
  • Falls Church’s Aurora House, a community-based group home for at-risk girls
  • Arlington’s Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney
  • Arlington’s Emergency Communications Center
  • Arlington’s Community Corrections Unit
  • Arlington’s Alcohol Safety Action Program

The proposed agreement features “no substantial changes” in comparison to the one renewed in 2016, according to the county. Both jurisdictions would continue to use previously-approved formulas for the city to reimburse the county.

“Since January 1988, when the City of Falls Church was transferred to the 17th Judicial District and Circuit (Arlington County), the County has provided the City with certain services related to the Courts and its programs,” notes a staff report to the Board. “In 2012, the County and the City executed an updated agreement for these services, and renewed the agreement terms in 2016.”

Staff of the county manager’s office recommended that the Board approve the renewal.
