State Sen. Barbara Favola, who represents the majority of Arlington County, is undergoing treatment for uterine cancer.
In a social media post today (Monday), the 69-year-old said she successfully underwent a hysterectomy on Friday at Virginia Hospital Center.
“A series of chemotherapy treatments are likely to follow, but I expect to continue my Senate duties between these sessions,” Favola said.

Favola, who represents Virginia’s 40th Senate District, has served in the state Senate since 2012. Her current district includes most of Arlington, except for the county’s southeast corner.
In 2023, Favola was elected to her fourth term with nearly 81% of the vote. She currently serves in Democratic leadership, splitting the duties of majority whip with Sen. Lamont Bagby.
Virginia’s senate has been adjourned since the end of a reconvened session held on April 2. Favola was in attendance that day for legislative business.
A Lyon Village resident, Favola previously served as a member of the Arlington County Board from 1997 through 2012.
