Nearly 12,000 homes and businesses were without power throughout Arlington and Falls Church on Thursday after a destructive thunderstorm ripped through the area.
Dominion reported outages affecting 10,859 customers in Arlington and 946 customers in the City of Falls Church, as of 5 p.m. The outages extended from Crystal City and Fairlington to a higher concentration in Arlington’s northern neighborhoods.
In all, some 115,000 Dominion customers were in the dark after the storms, including more than 70,000 in Fairfax County alone, according to the power company.
The storm arrived around 4 p.m. and quickly filled Arlington’s public safety airwaves with reports of trees down, wires down, blown transformers, stuck elevators and other impacts.
There were dozens of reports of trees and branches blocking roadways and bringing down utility lines, along with several reports of trees falling onto houses. First responders blocked off roads and, in at least one instance along the Spout Run Parkway, moved downed trees with the help of stuck motorists.
As of 5:10 p.m there were still new dispatches going out for trees into houses and transformer explosions.
As of 10 a.m. Friday there were still nearly 3,000 Dominion customers without power, according to the company’s outage tracker.
