Wilson Blvd intersection in Dominion Hills could get a traffic signal

Arlington County is collecting feedback on possible improvements to a Wilson Blvd intersection near the Dominion Hills Centre strip mall, possibly including a new traffic signal.

Respondents have until Sunday to submit feedback on existing pedestrian crossings, a bus stop and travel lanes at Wilson Blvd’s intersection with N. Livingston Street, as well as the pedestrian signal between Powhatan Springs Park and the strip mall.

The review process seeks to improve safety for all travelers on the corridor, and specifically reduce conflicts between transit vehicles and people biking on Wilson Blvd.

Ultimately, the review will also seek to determine whether the intersection warrants a traffic signal.

“This information will be used to develop recommendations for the intersection and adjacent street and sidewalks that will achieve the goals of the project and deliver on the goals of County Board-adopted transportation guidance,” the project webpage says.

Currently, Wilson Blvd and N. Livingston Street each have one striped pedestrian crosswalk. The bike lanes on this portion of Wilson Blvd are unprotected.

On an interactive map of the intersection, some respondents raised concerns about how wide the intersection is, and how fast many people drive on Wilson Blvd. Multiple respondents also noted issues with parked vehicles causing limited visibility.

“Doesn’t feel safe here where buses and bikes have to mix at the bus stop,” one respondent wrote.

The project team will review feedback from respondents and otherwise study the intersection to come up with a preliminary concept design later this year.
