Judge dismisses charges against rugby player accused of rape in Clarendon

All charges against a professional rugby player accused of rape in Clarendon were either dropped or dismissed this week.

A judge in Arlington County’s General District Court on Wednesday found no probable cause to advance the felony charges against Brady Gilliland-Daniel, according to online court records.

The 26-year-old had faced four felony charges in connection to the alleged incident in June: one count each of rape, strangulation, sodomy and object sexual penetration.

“We’re grateful the court did the right thing in dismissing the charges,” Gilliland-Daniel’s attorneys, Dan Goldman and Joni Robin, told ARLnow.

Arlington’s commonwealth attorney’s office on Wednesday also opted not to prosecute Gilliland-Daniel on two misdemeanor charges of sexual battery and assault and battery, according to online court records. The office did not respond to a request for comment.

In July, Gilliland-Daniel was arrested after a woman told police that he had sexually assaulted her at a housewarming party for her sister, who was an employee of Old Glory DC, Gilliland-Daniel’s team.

Gilliland-Daniel was removed from the team’s roster following his arrest. A team representative declined to comment, leaving it unclear if he will return to the team.
