JUST IN: Woman dies after being struck by bus while riding scooter in Rosslyn

The woman struck by a bus while riding a scooter in Rosslyn earlier this month has succumbed to her injuries.

Leah Carlomusto, 45, died at the hospital on Sunday, Arlington County police announced today (Tuesday). The Arlington resident was struck by a charter bus at the busy intersection of Langston Blvd and Ft. Myer Drive on the evening of Saturday, April 18.

Traffic camera footage seen by ARLnow showed Carlomusto riding into the crosswalk on an electric scooter while the bus was making a wide right turn, with neither the rider nor the driver apparently seeing one another until it was too late.

Carlomusto was left bloodied and motionless in the middle of the crosswalk while witnesses attended to her, prior to the arrival of medics.

The bus driver, a 45-year-old Florida resident, remained on scene and was issued a summons for Failure to Yield, according to police.

While a number of pedestrians have been seriously injured in crashes in recent years, the last reported fatal pedestrian crashes in the county were in 2023, on the Alexandria border, and in 2022, along Little Falls Road.

The Arlington County Police department continues to investigate a now fatal crash involving an e-scooter that occurred on the evening of April 18 in Rosslyn.

At approximately 5:32 p.m. on April 18, police and fire were dispatched to the intersection of Langston Boulevard and Fort Myer Drive for the report of a crash involving an e-scooter and a charter bus. The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the charter bus was turning right onto Langston Boulevard from Fort Myer Drive when he struck the e-scooter operator in the crosswalk.

The e-scooter operator, an adult female, was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, on April 26, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. She has been identified as Leah Carlomusto, 45, of Arlington, Va.

The driver of the charter bus, Luis Barreto Irizarry, 45, of Haines, Fl., remained on scene and was cited at the time of the crash with Failure to Yield and released on a summons.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information related to his incident is asked to contact Detective J. Trainer at 703-228-4185 or [email protected]. Information may also be reported anonymously through the Arlington County Crime Solvers hotline at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
