Someone fired gunshots outside a Green Valley apartment building early Saturday morning — and more than six hours passed before anyone called police.
That’s according to the latest Arlington County Police Department crime report.
The gunfire happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of S. Shirlington Road, ACPD said. A witness reported it just before 10 a.m., and responding officers found evidence confirming shots had been fired in the area.
No one was hurt and no property was damaged. The man who fired the gun ran off, and police have released only a limited description of the suspect.
Gunfire has occasionally drawn police to Green Valley in recent years, including shots that damaged a window of a residential building on 24th Street S. last October. Neighborhood leaders have spent decades pressing the county for more public safety resources.
Shots were also fired last month after a dispute at a Long Branch Creek basketball court, about a mile away from Saturday’s incident.

SHOTS FIRED (late), 2026-08080074, 2400 block of Shirlington Boulevard. At approximately 9:59 a.m. on August 8, police were dispatched to the late report of a shooting. It was determined at approximately 3:30 a.m., the male suspect discharged a firearm outside a residential building before fleeing the scene. A witness reported the incident just before 10:00 a.m. and responding officers recovered evidence confirming shots had been fired in the area. No injuries or property damage were reported. The suspect is described as a Black male wearing all black clothing. The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.
Separately, a man was arrested Saturday afternoon after police say he walked into a Shirlington business, got into a back room that was closed to the public and took cash from an employee before running off.
Officers were called to the 2800 block of S. Quincy Street around 1:15 p.m. and spotted a man fitting the description nearby, according to ACPD. He was charged with robbery and is being held without bond.
ROBBERY, 2026-08080099, 2800 block of S. Quincy Street. At approximately 1:15 p.m. on August 8, police were dispatched to the report of a robbery. Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect allegedly entered the business and entered a secured back room and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from an employee handling cash before fleeing the scene. During the course of the investigation, officers observed an individual matching the description of the suspect in the area and took him into custody. [The suspect], 40, of No Fixed Address was arrested and charged with Robbery. He was held without bond.
