Six sculptures made from thousands of canned goods are about to go up at the Pentagon City mall.
Next Friday, Sept. 11, a half dozen architecture firms with a can-do attitude will set up shop at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City in a charity event to combat food insecurity.
They’ll be building larger-than-life structures made from canned goods and inspired by characters from movies, Nintendo games, memes and more. The sculptures will stay up in the mall’s food court through Monday, Sept. 21, at which point the non-perishables will be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank.
“It’s always a good time, and a lot of especially kids like to see all of the different characters and things that are built,” Jaclyn Toole, a spokesperson for the American Institute of Architects Northern Virginia, told ARLnow. “If they’re in the area, it’s worth checking out.”
The project is part of Canstruction Northern Virginia, an annual event that collects canned goods for charity. This year’s competition will involve almost 20,000 cans of food, Toole said.
Visitors can watch the live build competition from 4-9 p.m. on Sept. 11. After that, through Sept. 21, people can spend $1 to vote on their favorite sculpture and enter for the chance to win dinner for two at Nina May in D.C.
In addition to people’s choice, other categories in the contest include most cans, best overall design, best meal and best structural design.
