A new bookstore specializing in fantasy, sci-fi and “all of your witchy needs” is getting close to opening in Falls Church.
The Dark, Unbound, in the works for over a year, has been gradually taking form at 112 W. Broad Street. A new sign for the “mystic parlor,” which plans to sell incense, herbs and candles in addition to books from diverse authors, says it’s planning to open this fall.
The business has shared a couple “sneak peeks” of the interior on social media this month, setting a spooky mood with velvet curtains, dark wooden furniture and mystical accessories.

The bookstore’s website promises to showcase “underrepresented voices in the fantasy, science-fiction, speculative fiction and horror genres.”
“We are opening The Dark, Unbound specifically to spotlight and celebrate these works from women, Black and Indigenous Americans, queer voices, and international writers, and to give them their place on the shelves instead of the same old familiar authors in these genres,” it says.
The website also mentions tea, coffee and comfortable seating throughout the store, along with merchandise such as art, journals, bookends and “metaphysical supplies that will appeal to the crafters, the curious, and the curiosity collectors.”
The Dark, Unbound will take over the storefront where Dominion Camera closed in summer 2024.
It will follow the opening of another Northern Virginia horror and sci-fi bookstore, Long Dark House, which opened in Alexandria at the start of this month.
