A stretch of road in Pentagon City remains blocked more than four months after a sinkhole appeared there.
The hole has been covered and a large metal plate has been installed on a portion of 13th Street S. between Costco and Metropolitan Park. However, the road is still barricaded as ownership of the Millennium at National Landing apartment building continues to coordinate with county staff.
“At this time, ownership is working directly with the County regarding the necessary repairs,” building management wrote in an email to tenants on Sept. 2. “Unfortunately, our onsite team has very limited information because we are not directly involved in the repair process.”
According to management, “ownership is waiting for the County to approve the plans and release the necessary permits.”
Katie O’Brien, spokesperson for Arlington County’s Department of Environmental Services, directed responsibility back at the property owner.
“The affected roadway is privately owned and maintained, and responsibility for repairs rests with the property owner,” she told ARLnow. “County staff have been in communication with the property owners and their representatives regarding the necessary repairs and related safety measures.”
A service request shared with ARLnow noted that county staff have received “multiple complaints at this location” and are “coordinating with the property owners.”
A tipster contacted this site about the sinkhole back in May. They noticed a traffic barrel on top of the hole on May 22, and over the next few days, they watched it sink several feet.
Another, smaller sinkhole was also present at the S. Fair Street intersection last week, a different tipster told ARLnow.
It’s unclear when this portion of 13th Street S. will reopen.
