Halloween in Arlington: When to expect trick-or-treaters and upcoming events

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so trick-or-treaters won’t have to share the streets with rush-hour traffic.

Before the big night, Arlington and Falls Church have a full slate of costume contests, trunk-or-treats and spooky-themed events over the next two-and-a-half weeks.

When do trick-or-treaters show up?

Unlike some localities, Arlington doesn’t set an official time or place for trick-or-treating. The candy run happens on Halloween itself, Saturday, Oct. 31, and usually starts shortly before sunset, around 6 p.m. Parents with younger kids often head out earlier.

Trick-or-treating usually wraps up by 8 p.m., though some stragglers stay out later.

Some streets get few, if any, trick-or-treaters, while others become de facto destinations. Popular spots include N. Jackson Street in Ashton Heights and 38th Street N. in Old Glebe. Drivers in those areas should be especially careful in the early evening.

Trick-or-treating in Falls Church follows a similar pattern. Private communities and apartment complexes may set their own schedules, so residents should check with their homeowners association or building management.

ACPD’s standing Halloween tips include wearing bright or reflective costumes, visiting only homes with their exterior lights on, keeping younger children with an adult, and checking candy before eating it.

Note: daylight saving time ends early the next morning (Sunday, Nov. 1), so Halloween merrymakers will get an extra hour of sleep.
