The severe winter storm expected to arrive tonight in Northern Virginia will likely bring days of slippery conditions on Arlington’s streets and sidewalks, authorities warn.

A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 11 p.m. tonight ahead of around 6-10 inches of expected snow, sleet and ice. Up to 14 inches of accumulation is possible in the region, with snow expected to turn to sleet tomorrow morning and freezing rain by Sunday evening, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

At least one day of trash collection has been canceled in Arlington as authorities are urging residents to prepare and stay off the roads during this weekend’s snowstorm.

Curbside collection and brush pick-up will not take place on Monday, and no make-up runs will happen later in the week, Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services announced today (Friday). Residents are advised to check the county website for any further updates about pick-up on Tuesday and beyond.

A four-mile race centered around Ireland’s Four Courts in Courthouse is returning this March, reviving a longtime tradition.

The Four Courts Four Miler will begin and end on March 14 at the restaurant and bar located on a hill at 2051 Wilson Blvd. Runners will first descend the hill, then turn around and run back up to be “rewarded with a tasty beverage,” says a description for the event run by DC Road Runners Club.

A pair of developers have closed on a planned 530-unit project in Green Valley, planning to deliver a mix of multifamily units and townhouses in early 2028.

Charlotte-based Crescent Communities and New York City-based Rockefeller Group announced the closing of 2480 S. Glebe Road in a press release today (Thursday), a project that sparked significant debate over gentrification concerns prior to securing County Board approval in April 2025.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger has declared a state of emergency ahead of this weekend’s snowstorm, which is expected to bring power outages along with heavy accumulation throughout Virginia.

The newly inaugurated governor signed an executive order today declaring an emergency “due to severe winter weather,” with the most severe impacts expected Saturday and Sunday. The D.C. area is likely to get more than 5 inches of snow, with double-digit accumulation also possible, according to a Winter Storm Watch issued today.

A trio of townhouses is coming to the site of a duplex destroyed in an explosion in the Bluemont neighborhood two years ago.

Construction on the project at the end of a cul-de-sac off of Bluemont Junction Trail is well underway, with an expected delivery in late summer, according to signage posted at the property. Each of the three townhomes, located at 836, 840 and 844 N. Burlington Street, are advertised with over 4,000 square feet.

Northern Virginia Democrats were in high spirits at the inauguration of Gov. Abigail Spanberger this weekend, looking toward new opportunities for a variety of bills held back by the previous administration.

The House Judiciary Committee is threatening to legally force Arlington’s commonwealth’s attorney to send documents related to her handling of an ongoing criminal investigation.

In the latest escalation of a months-long dispute, Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) argued that he has the authority to compel Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti to submit a wide variety of materials related to her requesting limits on the search and seizure of an Arlington activist’s cellphone.

An Arlington ultramarathoner with a history of extreme athletic stunts is preparing for one of his most ambitious challenges yet: seven back-to-back 50K races on all seven continents.

Michael Wardian, a 51-year-old Arlington Forest resident who ran across the entire country from coast to coast in 2022, has already competed in the World Marathon Challenge twice before, running a full marathon every single day in a different part of the world. Later this month, he’ll be back in action with an even loftier goal — seeking to beat the world record for the even longer 50K option.


Events

Performances, speeches and a day of service in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. are coming to Arlington this weekend.

Speeches from local civic activists and motivational speakers are coming to the Wakefield High School Auditorium from 5-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, along with performances from a lyrical dancer, an elementary school choir and middle school step team.
