Free jazz concerts are returning to Metropolitan Park in Pentagon City starting this week.

The first performance, featuring the JoGo Project, will take place this Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring chairs or sit on the green at 1330 S. Fair Street starting at 4 p.m.

Arlington ‘buy nothing’ group survives turmoil, expands to host meetups and free yard sale

On the recent anniversary of an online referendum on the fate of one of Arlington’s largest “buy nothing” groups, some 400 people gathered in a Rock Spring back yard.

Wandering among tables set with everything from gardening items to designer purses, members of Buy Nothing Arlington (Northwest), VA perused and picked out finds from dozens of people last month. It was like a big yard sale, organizers said — except, in keeping with the Facebook group’s identity of giving and receiving at no cost, everything was free.

Experts, lawmakers continue to clash over effort to add more flights to DCA

Virginia’s senators are stepping up efforts to nix a proposal to add five more round-trip flights to Reagan National Airport.

Sen. Tim Kaine — with the support of fellow Virginia Sen. Mark Warner and five other Democratic senators from Maryland, Colorado and Illinois — has proposed to strike the extra flights from a bill to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Public art installed outside new Ballston Harris Teeter

A new piece of public art celebrating Ballston’s past and present has appeared outside the recently relocated Harris Teeter.

“Present Pastimes,” a window installation by Brooklyn-based artist Olalekan Jeyifous, draws inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood to depict bygone buildings, signage and leisure activities, such as playing golf at a departed putt-putt on Wilson Blvd.

‘Freedom Concert’ returns to Netherlands Carillon this weekend

Path connecting Mount Vernon Trail and Long Bridge Park opens amid interchange upgrades

A half-mile path connecting Mount Vernon Trail with Long Bridge Park is now open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The connector between the popular waterfront trail and Boundary Channel Drive is part of a long-anticipated set up upgrades near Long Bridge Drive and the I-395 interchange.

Stronger protections needed, PTA group says after extended day worker’s child porn arrest

A parents association is calling for stronger guardrails in programs involving children following an extended day worker’s arrest for allegedly showing porn to kids.

The Arlington County Council of PTAs (CCPTA) said Arlington Public Schools should double down on systems of accountability after the 18-year-old suspect, who worked in an after-school program at Abingdon Elementary School in Fairlington, was arrested on charges of assault and battery and possession of child pornography.

Restorative justice director, wrongful conviction attorney receive permanent Arlington posts

More county funding for reviewing claims of innocence and coordinating restorative justice was included in Arlington’s new budget.

The county payroll will now include permanent spots for a conviction integrity attorney and a Director of Restorative Justice and Diversion, the office of Arlington’s top prosecutor  announced in a Friday press release.

More flights could be coming to DCA despite recent near-collision and pushback from Va. senators

A bill to add more flights to Reagan National Airport is moving forward despite opposition from Virginia’s senators.

Senate and House negotiators have reached an agreement to add five more daily round-trip flights to the airport. The 1,069-page reauthorization bill for the Federal Aviation Administration will now head to the Senate floor, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation announced today (Monday).
