Work on raised bus stop island on Clarendon Blvd scheduled to start soon

Construction on an elevated bus stop island, meant to improve safety at an intersection in Rosslyn, is scheduled to begin soon.

The quick-build safety project between the intersections of Clarendon Blvd with N. Pierce and N. Queen streets will impact Metrobus routes 4B and 38B as well as ART Route 45. In addition to elevating the bus stop, it will raise an existing protected bike lane on Clarendon Blvd.

“The bus stop island will provide a dedicated waiting and boarding area for bus passengers and continuous separation for the protected bike lane,” a notice to community members says. “This new configuration also reduces bus travel times by allowing buses to remain in the travel lane while picking up or dropping off passengers, eliminating the need to merge.”

Visually narrowing the travel lanes will also encourage through traffic and turning vehicles to slow down, the notice says.

Construction will happen on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will involve temporary closures of sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, parking areas and general travel lanes.

This segment of Clarendon Blvd is part of Arlington’s Vision Zero High Injury Network.
