A raised intersection may be coming to a Donaldson Run intersection in response to resident concerns about speeding vehicles that don’t yield to pedestrians.
Arlington County is currently collecting feedback on a concept design for upgrades to the intersection of Vacation Lane and Lorcom Lane.

F.C. Ditching Brick — “Staff is updating the sidewalk and crosswalk design standards in the City Streetscape Design Standards for commercial streets. The current all-brick standards was found to be costly to maintain and tripping hazards over time. The new sidewalk standards will be concrete with brick bands. The new crosswalk standards will be high-visibility continental crosswalks (zebra crossing) and red stamped asphalt on less busy streets.” [Falls Church Pulse]
Pride in the Pool — Numerous LGBTQ+ swimming competitions will be coming to Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center starting this week. As part of WorldPride celebrations, a large portion of the 2025 World LGBTQIA+ Aquatics Championship will take place at the facility between this Saturday and Thursday, June 5. A recent infrastructure issue at the aquatics center’s competition pool will not affect the schedule, a county spokesperson told ARLnow. –Dan Egitto
New Eatery Near Potomac Yard — “The owner of a popular local home improvement business is getting into the restaurant game. Michael & Son owner Basim Mansour is asking the city for approval to replace a 1940s-era convenience store with a 1,700-square-foot “fast casual restaurant with Asian foods with a Spanish and American influence.” That’s according to Mansour’s development special use permit request for the 6,600-square-foot property at 3314 Richmond Highway — across the street from Potomac Yard.” [ALXnow]

A Ballston-area medic unit temporarily went out of service last Friday due to ongoing staffing problems at the Arlington County Fire Department.
The unit at Station 2 ceased operations during the day shift to avoid holding firefighters on mandatory, unscheduled overtime, ACFD spokesperson Capt. Jamie Jill told ARLnow.

The exterior of a chapel in a North Arlington local historic district will receive a deep cleaning and restoration work over the summer.
The county’s Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) voted 13-0 last week to allow Walker Chapel United Methodist Church to use PVC materials to replace rotted wood in some areas. In other places, wood will still be required.

Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center is closed until further notice following an incident that caused the sprinkler and fire alarm system to go off.
A pipe in the ceiling of the county facility near Crystal City may have burst around 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday), according to scanner traffic. A tipster told ARLnow that the facility was evacuated following a “sudden water gush and falling ceiling tiles in [the] diving board area.”

A 23-year-old D.C. woman is facing several charges after an incident that prompted a sizable police response at the Pentagon City mall.
It happened Tuesday morning when an officer confronted a shoplifting suspect, who then allegedly tried to flee, leading to a foot pursuit and a struggle.

Recent management changes at an affordable housing complex bought with Amazon’s money followed months of advocacy and frustration from both tenants and county officials.
Last month, complaints led Washington Housing Conservancy, the property owner, to install a new management company to support ongoing changes at the Crystal House 1 and 2 buildings at 1900 and 2000 S. Eads Street. The shift didn’t come easily, however.
A 27-year-old Arlington man has been accused of assaulting a kid, threatening him and two other kids with a gun, and then trying to disarm an officer while getting arrested.
The alleged drunken incident happened Saturday afternoon near the Barcroft Apartments along Columbia Pike.

Planned cuts to federal funding for Medicaid, food assistance and other safety net programs have Arlington leaders turning to state officials for help.
At a meeting with county staff and County Board members last week, Arlington’s state delegates said they expect to return to Richmond in September to address cuts at the federal level.
