Points were abundant in blowout victories by Arlington’s three public-school teams in their second games of the 2025 high-school football season.

Two of the Sept. 5 wins were home, non-district blowouts for the Yorktown Patriots and Wakefield Warriors, now both 1-1, in public-school contests.

Strong performances by quarterbacks proved a major highlight for Arlington’s four high-school football teams during opening games of the 2025 fall season.

On the night of Aug. 28, the foursome combined to complete 53 passes for 772 yards and eight touchdowns, throwing just three interceptions. Their strong play could continue to be a big positive point for the remainder of the campaign.

A 24-yard field goal attempt off a high snap hit the right upright and bounced away in the final seconds, allowing the host South Lakes Seahawks of Reston to hold on for a 29-28 win the night of Aug. 28.

Mistake-prone special-teams play was costly in a season-opening loss for the Wakefield Warriors in high-school football action.

The Warriors fell behind 24-0 early in a 38-17 defeat to the host Falls Church Jaguars the night of Aug. 28.

They had not met in 42 years. But when the 2025 football season kicked off the night of Aug. 28, the Washington-Liberty Generals used a balanced attack to defeat the Bishop O’Connell Knights in high-school action.

W-L won 55-22 in what served as the season-opener for both squads.

It’s almost time for “Friday night lights” in Arlington as the county’s three public high school teams get ready for the upcoming season starting on Aug. 28.

Wakefield, Washington-Liberty and Yorktown are in different stages of development and expectations, but they all play in the Liberty District. That means they will all face one another this season.

Historic High View Park in North Arlington was the site of this year’s annual MSMJ Youth Foundation community event, hosted by former Yorktown High School football standout and current NFL player M.J. Stewart and his family.

The event included activities for children, music, food and drink and a celebration of the Halls Hill neighborhood.

With seven NFL seasons now complete, M.J. Stewart is busy preparing for his next pro campaign with the Houston Texans this coming fall.

This will be the fourth football season with Houston for the 5-foot-11-inch, 205-pound safety, a 2014 graduate of Yorktown High School where Stewart was a standout runningback, defensive back and kick returner.

The renowned D.C. Touchdown Club recently recognized former longtime Yorktown High School head football coach Bruce Hanson for his highly successful career and amassing 302 career victories over more than 40 years in the game.

Hanson was honored at the club’s annual awards dinner on April 10 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, receiving the Circle of Legends award.

The start of high-school football season is still a good five full months away, but the official schedules have been released for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

All four Arlington County varsity teams open play on Thursday night, Aug. 28, with two of those squads meeting in their openers.
