Bicycle Derby to Take Over Crystal City Parking Garage

by Katie Pyzyk — March 6, 2012 at 3:00 pm 2,490 13 Comments

Expect to see a lot more bicycles in Crystal City this weekend. Saturday is the inaugural Crystal City Diamond Derby.

Unlike most other bike races, this one takes place indoors at the parking garage at 1850 Crystal Drive. Both amateur and competitive cyclists will take part in events and attempt to win awards and prize money.

Spectators can enjoy a free party throughout the day at the lounge, which includes a large screen to watch the action, live music and a cash bar. An outdoor midway will be set up with vendors, food and a bicyclist sprint lane.

Activities start at 2:00 p.m., but the major competitions take place from 4:30-9:30 p.m. They’re immediately followed by an awards ceremony, then the Diamond Derby Ball which runs from 10:30 p.m. to midnight.

Although the event is free and open to the public, registration and fees are required for competitors.

Too bad it’s not a bicycle demolition derby.

You clearly have never seen bike polo…

Why? Are you one of the drivers out there driving while texting? Or speeding through red lights? Or forcing pedestrians out of crosswalks when the walkers have the right of way and were there well before the car or truck? If this is supposed to be a comment on cyclists who break traffic laws, you should think about the majority of car drivers who break traffic laws every day? (Is there anyone who actually follows the speed limit on the GW Parkway, Rock Creek Parkway or the Beltway in non-rush hour?)

      • Arlington, Northside

None of the above, but I too think a bike demolition derby would be fun to see, just like a car demolition derby or figure eight bus racing.

And why would any follow the artificially low speed limit on the Beltway or GW Parkway? Parts of Rock Creek should be taken below the speed limit though. Cyclists who don’t follow the law by going through lights, stop signs or weaving in and out of traffic are going to be stopped by the physics police.

Your first two examples are fair points, but cyclists weaving in and out of traffic is perfectly acceptable under the law.

Psst! “Physics police…” and yes, he’s right, the Newtonian cops will win every time, law be damned.
