From neighborhood parades to backyard grilling to fireworks viewings, yesterday’s July 4 celebrations in Arlington largely went off without a hitch, despite continued power outages and the threat of evening storms.

The following are some of the scenes captured by photographers in our Flickr pool.

I love going to live fireworks displays and watching them on my phone. So cool.

People love not being in the moment, I guess.

Nice photos. But some important reflections of the day and evening were missing:

    – Folks sweltering without A/C. (Yesterday afternoon I saw one family’s feeling of relief and pleasure upon entering a store with AC.)

    – FOlks in dark (no power) residences. (Oh, for some light, even candle light.)
(Reading by candle light when power was out was an experience that generated real appreciation for the reading that Lincoln and others did by candle light.
Politically: Thinking about the work that the founders did by candle and oil burning lights and without A/C:
The gathering at which the constitution was created, with extensive compromises in order to gain the needed support, was during a Philadelphia summer, and to assure secrecy, the windows were closed and drapes drawn. Whew. Close to a torture hot box.
No big relief at night. Not even a Motel 6 then. No A/C, no showers. 4-6 to a bed. Chamber pots for bodily eliminations. (Good that the olfactory sense adapts quickly.
Has the quality of political thought and work improved — even stayed the same, with modern comforts. Maybe the politicos of today need to work under the conditions in which the founders did their work. They couldn’t be much worse, and they just might do better.

Thanks to all the shutterbugs for the great photos. It was dang gone hot outside last night, but fun watching the fireworks nonetheless.

Great pix, although its hard to imagine so much fun being had despite the “threat of evening storms”.
