Rabbit in Clarendon Reduces Hours to Lunch-Only

by ARLnow.com — February 22, 2013 at 2:30 pm 2,547 30 Comments

The new Rabbit restaurant in ClarendonRabbit Salad and Grill, at 3035 Clarendon Blvd, has reduced its hours to weekday lunch service only.

Rabbit first opened in the summer of 2011, offering salads, sandwiches and dinner plates. It was formerly open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 or 10:00 p.m., seven days a week. It also experimented with late night food options for Clarendon bar-goers.

Rabbit is now open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Owner Aaron Gordon, who also owns local frozen yogurt and cupcake stores TangySweet and Red Velvet, says he made the change because “our best time-period is lunch.”

“We have gone to a lunch-only schedule for the next few weeks during the cold winter days,” Gordon told ARLnow.com. “We will re-evaluate [our] schedule for Rabbit soon.”

Real exciting news, Arlnow. Weekend starting early?

    • Rabbit employee

Yes, weekend starts in 20 minutes for us.

  • Kate

Well this isn’t surprising considering they’ve cut over 3/4 of their menu and no longer serve tuna. Fail, Rabbit. Fail.

    • ArlDweller

So true. If you don’t have dinner options, how could you expect to attract a dinner crowd?

    • GoodOmens

Agree – went there the other day for the first time in a while and was saddened by their choices. The tuna sandwich was my only reason for wanting to go.

    • m

      Well-played, Ms. Updike, well-played.

  • Arlington notable

    I find this very off-putting.

  • G Clifford Prout

I’ve got some slow-cooked chicken if anyone wants it.

    • Nancy

      +100

    • Dezlboy

      Spit-Take anyone? :-)

  • great idea

So even after stealing crock pot chicken, they can’t afford to keep it open?

  • ArlDweller

Lunch is their busy time because they have no descent dinner options. If they expanded to include a dinner menu, i’d probably eat dinner there. pretty simple to me.

    • m

I leave “descent” options for the lycra-wearing bikers.

  • GoodOmens

In two years time Rabbit will be the new Sam’s Cafe.

“The place is alllwayys closed. How does it stay in business?” “It must be a drug front” – Says anyone who is never in Clarendon for the workday.

  • LateNightOptions?

Yes… lame. Not long after they opened I started craving the banana nutella sandwich after the bars closed… which is now… GONE. Oh yeah… and they must have done just a very short stint at late night food service? The place is never open.

    • Congratulations

” I started craving the banana nutella sandwich ”

Have you chosen a name yet ??

  • ArlRightNow

Now what am I suppose to do with my Rabbit (dinner only) groupon…

“Now what am I suppose to do with my Rabbit (dinner only) groupon…”

Frame it and save it for your grandchildren…..they will be most grateful !!

    • Ballstonian

If you call or email them, Groupon will probably credit your account for the price you paid – they have always been reasonable with me when I notified them that I had a problem using a particular Groupon.

      • John Fontain

Or just use it for lunch one day – it’s the same menu.

  • cj

It will be gone by Halloween.

  • John Fontain

I went there a few weeks ago for lunch and it was fantastic. I got skirt steak with mashed potatoes and a salad. I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised.

I hope things pick back up for them if they give evening hours another try. Maybe it’s the outdoor patio style furniture that turns off the dinner crowd?

    • Jim

      I was really pleasantly surprised.

Note to self: Rabbit is an effeminate hangout.

      • KathyInArlington

Jim — trying to be as rude as you can be? Mission accomplished.

  • DCCHughes

This really sucks. I routinely go in there to grab dinner on my way home after the gym. I’ll admit I’ve been a little peeved that they have been out of key ingredients for some of the salads on occasion. And the GroupOn crowds recently have been VERY annoying, but I would put up with that over having them just closed. Bummed!

  • Xander

I don’t get the place. It’s called “Rabbit”. You would think a place with a name like that would have some wider variety of vegetarian or vegan fare. But it’s paltry. If you are going to be overpriced “organic” not-so-varied cuisine, at least try to cater to us vegan/vegetarians who are willing to put up with such crap because restaurants catering to us are so hard to find (Well, until Protein Bar showed up at the corner of Glebe and Wilson).

  • YorktownStudent

    Rabbit has terrible food.

  • Bill

We went there for dinner for the first time last Sunday night. I got the grilled chicken, mash potatoes, and a salad and thought the food was really good. I told my GF we should eat there for dinner more often…

  • ballstonian

That is actually one of my favorite places in Clarendon. The mashed potatoes are great. Some of that with the tofu and salad is a pretty good meal.

  • alaaro

Terrible food, Im shocked this place is still in business.
