by ARLnow.com April 20, 2011 at 3:03 pm 3,149 30 Comments

This Friday is Earth Day, and the folks from Bike Arlington and Capital Bikeshare will be celebrating by showing off one of the new Bikeshare stations in Rosslyn.

The event is being held at the Bikeshare station at Fort Myer Drive and Wilson Boulevard. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Bikeshare representatives will be demonstrating how the system works and giving away bike maps, CaBi schwag and one-day membership coupons.

The three other locations where Bikeshare stations were installed this weekend are North Lynn Street and 19th Street, North Pierce Street and Clarendon Boulevard, and North Rhodes and 16th Street North.

can’t wait for them to put a station in at courthouse… ride one down hill take metro back up. ride one down hill take metro back up. maybe pick up some sweet babes along the way and head into artisphere.

Ladies and Gentlemen, If you look right you will doored by a Lexus SUV with MD plates who’s driver never learned to look before opening the car door. If you look left, you will be cut off by an ART bus.

No thanks, I basically could walk before I could bike (from Holland), but I will never bike on the streets in the US. People simply are not accustomed to check for bikers, and it only takes 1 person not to pay attention.

      • Legal Transplant

I meant bike before walk of course. Sorry :/

        • bob

No problem. We know you Dutch aren’t too bright.

      • CW

I actually think the drivers in Arlington and DC aren’t half bad when it comes to how they treat cyclists. And the ubuiquity of CaBi as it grows in scale and usage is only going to help, I think.

        • LyonSteve

          It’s those darn Maryland drivers!

          • Not Lyin’ Steve

      • borf

I bike on the streets here all the time. Just not all of them.

  • LyonSteve

If you go to their feed, you’ll see that they still have Courthouse listed.

I’m not an expert on this, but I can read installed false.

    Court House Metro / 15th & N Uhle St

Apparently the company behind Bikeshare was supposed to install the Courthouse station and at the last moment the county prevented them from doing it.

    • bob

when in doubt, blame the dutch.

1302972900000 is the number of milliseconds since the Jan 1 1970 epoch – or Apr 16, 2011. So it looks like they planned installing it last Saturday.

        geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. 🙂

    • For clarification:
The Courthouse station is delayed because additional connecting pieces are required to make the station fit the space. It will be installed in about 10 weeks. The permit was not denied by the County. The County and DDOT own and manage Capital Bikeshare.
The free one day trial memberships still require a credit card, but the $5 membership fee is waived.
As with all Capital Bikeshare memberships, you can take as many trips of 30 minutes or less as you like in the membership period at no additional cost. Trips over 30 minutes have small usage fees. Visit CapitalBikeshare.com for more details, or join us at the station party to learn all about the program!

10 weeks is a long time. It will be summer by then!

      • LyonSteve

Chris, thanks for the useful information. Any word on stations west of Rosslyn?

        • Expect lots more Capital Bikeshare stations this summer (hopefully July), including Courthouse, Clarendon, Virgina Square, Ballston. Then a few more in the fall to fill in the gaps.

streets are for cars, not for bikes

    • Honr. Jameson Pierpont Morganthou, IV

Good sir, thoroughfares can be meant for none only than carriages and the horses by which they are drawn. I do shudder at the mere thought of anything but!

      • ClizzleDizzle

        What in Darnation?

      • Eponymous Coward

By Jupiter, Lord Morganthou is right. These horseless carriages the youth dash about in an uncivilised abomination.

  • 4Arl

If they can give one day passes away to anyone, why do they make paying members guarantee credit card payment of $1,000 for bikes stolen or not checked in by 24 hours?

    • CrystalMikey

I would bet that pass would still require you to insert a credit card for just such a reason.

      • steve

Not even that, the membership only includes free trips of less than 30 minutes. Anything else, they charge you for.

        • Michael H.

It’s really not that difficult to check in a bike before the 30 min. time limit and check it back out again.

          • 98% of trips by annual members are less than 30 minutes.

  • Dennis Sellin

I have been a member of CaBi since it began last September, have ridden it about 75 times, and have never paid anything (other than my membership fee)! It’s a great value to me, saves me tons of time, and is fun.
