Update at 3:00 p.m. — The driver of the van has been charged with reckless driving, according to Arlington County police spokeswoman Det. Crystal Nosal. A passenger from the bus and the van driver were both taken to the hospital after the accident, Nosal said.

A minivan slammed into the back of an Arlington Transit (ART) bus at the intersection of N. Glebe Road and 4th Street, near Ballston, just after 11:30 this morning.

The accident happened while the bus was stopped at a bus stop, with at least a dozen passengers on board. The driver of the van has been taken to the hospital, but is expected to be okay. Several bus passengers were evaluated by paramedics on the scene for minor injuries.

Northbound Glebe Road was completely blocked at 3rd Street for more than 45 minutes, but has since reopened. The bus suffered only minor damage and was driven away.

    Pictures make the story!

Looks like someone may have partied it up a little too hard on Cinco de Mayo.

My prediction…a cell phone was involved.

I bet cell phone, how else do you not see a bus?

    • Take it down a notch

Just because they hit the bus doesn’t mean they didn’t see it. I used to work with a woman who rear-ended a giant dump truck at a stop light. Her right foot was in a cast, so she was using her left foot on the gas and brake pedals, and it slipped off the brake as she was approaching the truck. (Then she decided not to go through her insurance company to repair her car, chose the cheapest body shop she could find, and spent many hours on the phone with them trying to re-fix things after they did a crappy job. Her life was full of that kind of drama.)

Cellphone. Using a cellphone while driving is about the same as drunk driving.

    • Worse. Drunk driving massivly impairs reflexes. Cell phone driving causes no reflexes because you are looking at something other than the road. It is about time the law catches up.

thank you for that astute observation.

There must be another one there because it is now 1 Art bus, 1 Box truck that rear-ended it and sideswiped a car. (1245)

That is correct. There was another one (no injuries) a short time later.

Yesterday at about 5-5:30am a motorcyclist was hit by a sedan at the intersection of Fairfax and Monroe – I know because I was awake, heard it, and watched the emergency response from my balcony. But I can’t find anything about it on the web – does anyone know anything about it?

That’s also the third time in the eight months I’ve lived in this building that an accident has taken place right there.

Glebe road going from Pershing to Quincy is nightmare. they need to get rid of the left turns and then the left turn at Henderson. or widen the road. it is a disaster. forces me to go on pershing and up Oakland.

I try to avoid that entire stretch of Glebe. Some one rear-ended me last summer right where today’s accident occured. In fact I drove by this accident heading south to go the Mr Carwash during my lunch break, today. I am a little disappointed that I didnt get to send the tip to ARLnow.com!

I doubt widening the road is an option, but I agree that they should prohibit left turns down that stretch, to at least keep one lane of traffic flowing.

    • brendan

Agreed. That section is extremely dangerous. Pedestrians playing frogger, heavy traffic with people making left turns causing havoc in one lane while buses stopping every 50ft in the other…. it’s a mess.

The Buckingham neighborhood and that stretch of Glebe are the worst. People dart across the road into oncoming traffic and people generally drive like nutjobs. It’s terrible also because the rest of the surrounding area is generally decent without these types of problems. It’s like an Oasis of suck.

soccer moms are a menace to the road

I think the solution is to narrow the streets and also the ART buses.

    Easy fix.
