“Wild West” and “Caribbean Breeze” are two things that generally do not go together. Neither are “Habitat for Humanity” and “poker tournament.”

Nonetheless, a “Wild West” Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament and Networking Party to benefit Habitat for Humanity is being held tonight at Caribbean Breeze restaurant in Ballston (4100 N. Fairfax Drive).

Up to 40 players will ante up $100 to compete for a flat screen TV and a pair of gift certificates. Online registration for the tournament is still open.

In addition to poker, the event will also feature cigar rolling, whiskey tastings, special cocktails, raffles, a “special celebrity guest” and networking opportunities.

Non-poker players will be assessed a $20 cover charge, unless they “dress the part” (cowboy hat, huge belt buckle, cowboy boots, etc.), in which case the cover drops to $10. The event starts at 5:30 p.m.

As of 5/31/2011, Caribbean Breeze owes $8,419.87 in delinquent meals taxes to Arlington County. See http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/Treasurer/files/file73709.pdf

That money allows them to let people in at $10 off the cover charge if they wear the Wild West outfit described above. Without this fundraiser, Caribbean Breeze would have a slow Wednesday night. Instead, they host this fundraiser and fill the place.

Don’t reward delinquent restaurants and bars. Skip this fundraiser. Instead, give directly to Habitat for Humanity at http://www.habitat.org.

let Arlington county deal with tax issues but don’t punish habitat – also you have incorrectly asked people to donate to habitat.org whihc is habitat international and not the northern virginia affiliate

Oh good lord ArlNow, you and your generalizations! First you anger the massive goodwill constituency by potentially portraying the establishment as one that is less than the highest-class, then you allegedly pick on and organization that helps the disabled by writing about it using objective facts. Now you’re going to have all the Caribbean cowboys and free-house-for-the-needy-building poker players up in arms! When will you ever learn??! 😛
