The final screening of this year’s Crystal City outdoor summer film festival took place last night, but not before the theme for next year’s festival was revealed.

The festival, which is coming up on its sixth year, will host an entire summer of romantic comedies in 2012. Dubbed ‘Crystal Screen: Date Night Crystal City,’ the movie series will again start in June and wrap up at the end of August.

Films set to be shown under the stars next year include: Sex and the City, The Wedding Singer, Sweet Home Alabama, Hitch, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Sleepless in Seattle, The Proposal, Bridget Jones’s Diary, You’ve Got Mail, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Love Actually, Pretty Woman and When Harry Met Sally.

“The audience has selected a great line up of movies, and I know that everyone is looking forward to a romantic night under the stars in Crystal City,” Crystal City BID President Angela Fox said in a statement. The past two ‘Crystal Screen’ themes were ‘By the Numbers’ — movies with numbers in the title — and ‘Star Trek’ — an entire summer of Star Trek films.

    Why all the chick flicks?

That’s bc the senoritas like going there. We have to keep them happy. Lol

Probably a reaction to the themes of recent years: Star Trek, James Bond, superhero movies. This year was more of a mix between action movies, comedies and chick flicks. Next year they’re going all the way over to the other end of the spectrum.

I filled out one of the surveys asking them not to go 100% chick flick next year, but apparently I got outvoted. There must have been a lot of complaints that previous themes were too action-oriented. Maybe 2013 will feature the action movies of James Cameron (Terminator, Aliens, True Lies, The Abyss, Avatar). Or not.

OK – having embarrassed myself with my lack of Fighter Jet knowledge late last week, were those Warthogs that just did an ANC flyover?

    “When Hairy Met Sally”… LOL…

    • Lou

That version was much better than the Hollywood one.

    • Yes, that’s a whole ‘nother type of film. We’ve corrected, thanks for pointing it out.

My roommate is a sucker for romcoms.

  • CW

Every year’s unofficial theme: heat stroke.

OMG!!! This is a horrible. Who came up with this movie list. These movies came out during the Clinton Administration. Hopefully they can include some 21st century movies

    • CW

Yeah, who would ever want to be reminded of that time when the government was operating in the black, tech companies were booming, we weren’t…oh wow, I’ve done it now, haven’t I?

    • Grandstander

A lot of the best movies ever made came out during the Nixon administration. I’m not sure I understand the relevance. My gripe is that all these movies are terrible and appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Why not have a theme like, Snubbed Best Pictures, or Great TV Adaptations?

  • Bill

Maybe they should have picked a few movies that aren’t played on cable in a continuous loop.

  • Charles

Let me know when they announce the films for 2013.
