Kitchen Fire at Cafe Asia in Rosslyn

by ARLnow.com — October 6, 2011 at 11:21 am 3,157 30 Comments

(Updated at 11:40 a.m.) Firefighters are on the scene of a kitchen fire at Cafe Asia restaurant (1550 Wilson Blvd) in Rosslyn.

The fire, which reportedly started in an oven, was quickly extinguished. Nonetheless, the office building above Cafe Asia was evacuated as a precaution, sending scores of workers out onto the sidewalk.

Firefighters have started to pack up their gear and leave while light, hazy smoke is ventilated from the restaurant.

No word yet on whether the restaurant will have to close for an extended period of time. Normally, a health inspector must give the okay for a restaurant to reopen after a fire.

They evacuated an office building in downtown DC because of a kitchen fire in Rosslyn?

    • sitruc

Don’t worry. You didn’t imagine that.

  • LP

What are you talking about, CW?

    • CW

      It was a joke.

The sentence now reading “Nonetheless, the office building above Cafe Asia was evacuated as a precaution, sending scores of workers out onto the sidewalk” originally said “Asia Nine” instead of Cafe Asia. Asia Nine is in NW DC.

I love how the lady in the picture is smiling about this situation!

    • Terry

I believe she is the manager – she always has that smile on her face. I love this place, hope they’re not closed for too long.

    • bred

She’s happy because the business is not going to be burnt to the ground thanks to the ACFD.

    • charlie

because she has some pretty hot public sector employees converging on her place.
or maybe she is thinking those meals she sends across the street to the Fire Dept. are paying off!! (I assume she does, I mean, I would if I ran a restaurant across from a fire dept.)

      • Wants to Know

So where are the pics of these hotties?

      • CW

        • charlie

CW, I’m not THAT literal. ACFD and ACPD are quite nice looking men.

  • Stu Pendus

I bet the fire drill was hectic and mass confusion.

    • van

      Stu: Nah, just boring.

  • Arlington Native

This is one of my favorite Arlington restaurants. I hope they are able to reopen soon.

  • DudeGuy

Hopefully it burns it burnt all the hair people find in their food here.

  • novasteve

Don’t they realize this violates the smoking ban?

Your reading public wants to know: did the ACFD walk across the street or did they actually send an engine counterclockwise around the block with full lights and siren?

From the position of the firetruck in the fifth photo, I’ve got to assume it’s the latter.

    • Lee-n-Glebe

Around the block, judging by the trucks flying up Clarendon Blvd a mere minutes before this thread was posted. ArlNow is fast.

    • AllenB

Why wouldn’t they bring the engine? That’s what has all of their equipment.

      • Lee-n-Glebe

An engine was definitely one of the trucks headed that way. Maybe the nearest hydrant was around a corner somewhere?

      • BAllen

They couldn’t carry that equipment the few yards across the street? Seems like it would be quicker.

        • AllenB

You mean they should stop to take the equipment off the truck – hoses, ladders, axes, masks, etc – and run across the street, not knowing the condition of the building where the fire was reported?

          • BAllen

            Everything except the ladders, yes.

          • AllenB

And how do they know in advance when they get the alarm that they don’t need the ladders? Or any of the other equipment on the trucks? Should they check out the conditions and then run back across the street for more equipment?

        • Larchmont

You must have never packed for a trip and then realized you forgot something.

    • van

Several vehicles, actually. They do it for drills as well; it’s hilarious watching them drive away, just to come right around the corner, 50 feet behind where they started.

  • Eyesofarl

They circle the block to get 360 and see as much as they can because citizens don’t always call in all the details and they don’t want to be caught not knowing.

What I’d like to know is what in the heck happened to Cafe Asia’s website?
