World of Beer Requests Live Entertainment, Outdoor Seating

(Updated at 4:05 p.m.) World of Beer, which is coming to 901 N. Glebe Road in Ballston, has requested a permit for live entertainment and outdoor seating. The Arlington County Board is scheduled to vote on the permit this weekend.

The original application requested a permit for live music and dancing from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. every day. However, after receiving advice from county staff, the permit request was revised to be in line with other similar permits around the county. It now says live entertainment would run until 12:00 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and until 1:30 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, with exceptions on certain holidays.

The application also requests outdoor seating on the sidewalk along N. Glebe Road. A separate application was filed for a 70 square foot canopy sign.

County staff who have reviewed the request note that there are no residences close to the location and the live entertainment would not negatively affect businesses in the area. Therefore, they’re suggesting the county approves World of Beer’s permits.

The restaurant’s website still lists the expected opening date as July 2012.

    Wat to go!

I have never understood the point of outdoor seating for any restaurant in the area of Fairfax/Glebe/Wilson. With so much traffic noise and exhaust, I can’t imagine enjoying a meal or drinks. I don’t even like walking on those sidewalks.

yeah i hate walking around that intersection. but some outdoor music/seating may make it more interesting…. to walk by, not really sit and eat at.

    • Ballstonian

I’ve eaten outside at Vapiano’s several times and its been fine. Same with Teds.

  • Sam’s Mart

VT Kids will love it I am sure.

  • Ballston Irish

I walk past this space every day and I just don’t see how they are going to fit a bar/restaruant in it. It looks way too small. Maybe I am missing something though.

“County staff who have reviewed the request note that there are no residences close to the location”

Far be it from me to dispute the word of “county staff,” but there ARE residences near this location. Just behind the building in question is a high-rise condominium, the Continental, and the Westin Hotel is equally close to the proposed site of World of Beer.

Perhaps “county staff” were consulting an outdated map.

    • Troll Patrol

      Behind a high-rise bldg. Get a life…

so the people living on the 3rd story are screwed because the noise won’t effect someone on the 15th floor?

        • Brian

I think the residences are on the opposite side of a building, which should make it hard to hear. However, as a resident of the 14th floor of the Alta Vista, I can hear the live music and the drunken 2 am “WOOOO!!s” coming out of Caribbean Breeze every weekend.

I live on the 11th floor of the Altav Vista and couldn’t agree with you more. That restaurant is the #1 reason why I can’t open my windows on a nice summer day.

County Staff will approve anything. They don’t live here, and many of them are not too swift. They reconsider once informed neighbors weigh in, but in general, they shoot from the hip. Remember, county staff gave us Artisphere . . .

I obviously can’t speak for everyone, but as a current resident of the Continental, I whole-heartily support any type of music at World of Beer.

on a side note, I doubt we would even be able to hear anything anyways… Like Troll Patrol said, it’s on the other side of a high-rise building and there is always plenty of traffic (which I can’t hear anyways, minus the emergency vehicles)

  • Sweet, sweet beer

Sounds like a plan to me (especially the live music). Let the battle of BW3, the Turtle and World of Beer begin. In this instance, I agree with Couty staff…the music shouldn’t bother anyone and the sidewalk is plenty large for some tables.

  • novasteve

So what kind of food will they serve given they have to, and this place is just a bar back in Florida or wherever it’s from?

    • nom de guerre

Slim Jims, Cheese Whiz and pickled eggs.

      • OldTimer

Don’t forget the pickled pigs feet, pork rinds, and gator bites. Just get me a bucket and let the music play.
