Outdoor ice skating may not be the most popular recreation activity in 70 to 80 degree sunny weather, but the Pentagon Row ice rink is still open for business should anybody want to try their luck on the wet ice.

The rink had a thin layer of water on top of it when we stopped by around lunchtime today. No one was skating, but plenty of people were eating their lunch outside around the plaza.

The skating rink will remain open despite the warm weather, we’re told. The last scheduled day of skating for the season is Sunday, March 18.

I will be a pool of water very soon if not now.

Eh, just close it down for the season already. No one is going to be skating this week anyway.

How does the County keep the rink in condition for skating with these 75-degree temperatures???

Is this thing run by the County?

A lawsuit waiting to happen? haha

It’s very doable. Within the glass at Verizon center, the temperature can be up to the 80’s. Just have to make sure the cooling system under the rink is in working order and they use less water to resurface.

An indoor rink is in cooled, humidity-regulated air and more importantly shielded from sunlight.

I’m sure the giant lights hanging from the Verizon Center ceiling don’t do that ice any favors either. Point is if it’s well maintained these last few days there shouldn’t be problems keeping the ice solid and safe.
