Arlington County police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in Crystal City.

The incident happened just after 3:00 a.m. According to police, four people were posing for photos behind a vehicle parked in front of a hotel on the 2700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway when an unknown suspect fired between 3 and 6 gunshots. The hotel desk staff heard the shots and called police.

Responding units found a male victim shot in both ankles. The man was treated by medics and taken to George Washington University Hospital, according to police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. Four bullet casings were found at the scene.

The victim and his three friends claimed that they had only heard the gunshots and had not seen the shooter. Sternbeck said there was “not much cooperation” from the group, and that the investigation is ongoing.

The incident is not believed to be connected to the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally, Sternbeck said. The Hyatt Regency Crystal City hotel at 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway is the rally’s official hotel.

shot in both ankles. you know that hurt!

  • Quoth the Raven

“Not much cooperation” = “They know who did it”

    • Aaron

Congratulations on decoding that subtle bit of policespeak. You earn a cookie!

      • Quoth the Raven

Woo-hoo!!! I knew I logged on today for a reason!

  • Charles

Rolling Thunder? More like “Putting your bike in a trailer and driving to DC so you can tooling around town making lots of noise pretending to be a real biker” Thunder.

    • Cletus Van Damme

I could not get over the amount of vehicles and trailers parked in southern portion of Crystal City this weekend. I thought to myself, “what a joke.” If you’re going to ride, ride.

    • WeiQiang

      Towed Thunder.

    • Carol

Rolling Thunder Charles, do you really even have a clue as to what our purpose of being there is? It surely doesn’t sound like it!
Rolling Thunder Inc. IS an organiztion for POW & MIA accountability and helps Veterans in numerous ways.
Our members come from all over the country to support our cause. Not to be a Biker. We are not even a MC club. We only use the bikes to help raise awareness and bring attention for our cause. And we do this because we truly appreciate our service men & woman that sacrafice so much for “OUR” FREEDOM”
Or is your freedom something you just take for granted every day? remember… Freedom Isn’t Free!

      • Z

Freedom isn’t free? So a bunch of assholes in tight leather vests have to go revving their Harleys at every intersection for 3 days? Thanks for defending me! I have no issue at all with the “purpose” of Rolling Thunder (in fact, it’s a nice gesture), however the incessant revving of engines with straight pipes is idiotic and serves no purpose whatsoever except for trying to look like a badass and attract attention. Btw, I’m a motorcycle rider myself, and have no need to be a jerk like these guys so don’t bother going there.

  • Enough already

Hip Hop rally….why can’t they keep their nonsense in DC

  • LP

Shot in the ankles, is this the new mafia version of shooting someone in the kneecaps?

    • WileE

They were aiming for the knees but kids wear their pants so low these days…

  • Jimmy

Why was it in the story that there was “no connection” to Rolling Thunder? Just because an event is in town that means that there is crime related to such event? Seriously, what is someone were to say the same thing about Occupy D.C.Please stop trying to make Rolling Thunder to be some sort of Sons of Anarchy when many of the riders do a great service by reminding us of those people who have given their lives for this country.

    • drax

“The Hyatt Regency Crystal City hotel…is the rally’s official hotel.”

      That’s why it was mentioned.

It’s funny that you think something that says there was no connection to Rolling Thunder is making a connection to Rolling Thunder. Logic fail.

      • uh yeah LOL nice logic skills, i like it. but i kinda doubt this had absolutely “no connection” to rolling thunder, seeing as no one else was out at 3 am in crystal city this weekend LOL.

*howls & hops on motorcycle to ride away from DC*

        • drax

          I’m not saying it’s true.

          • i would never question you, drax. was agreeing w/ u & disagreeing with jimmy.

*howls & hands u a token of our friendship*

          • drax

            Good dog.

*hands you tiny, insignificant bit of food that will make you do absolutely anything*

          • i’m a wolf, not a domestic dog! i’m wild!

*howls & runs off with the food but is thankful for your kindness*

          • drax

            Sure you are.

            Sit!

*hands you another tiny treat as you obey*

          • *bites your hand & runs into the woods with your tiny treat*

          • drax

            Touche’, wolf.

    • DeportEmAll

We don’t need any more reminders. There are plenty all the time, especially if you live in Washington DC.

    • Carol

Jimmy, Being a Nationl Rolling Thnder member, I thought it was a great idea to mention in the article that RT had no affiliation with the incident.

  • DeportEmAll

Did they issue a description of the perps?

    • WileE

      Nondescript male, 12″ tall.

  • AKA

thank GOODNESS someone finally put something out about this. it was silent all weekend even though hubby saw crime scene out there. we were wondering why there was no press on it.

  • novasteve

Only 363 days until Rolling Thunder heads back to this area 🙁

    • nom de guerre

But they will be performing daily dry runs between now and next Memorial Day weekend.

      • Quoth the Raven

The dry runs will be performed only when Sam’s is open –

  • Derek

How many drive-by shootings occur in Arlington on a typical weekend? Not connected to Rolling Thunder? Well, there’s the Rolling Thunder organization that runs the event. Then there are the knuckleheads who show up on their loud and illegal bikes. There was non-stop bad behavior in Arlington Friday and Saturday nights.

    • Jimmy

Outside of the shooting, how is bad behavior any different from a typical night in clarendon. There is always bad behavior going on from DUIs to destruction of property to fights. Yes, so glad that the crime rate goes down after Rolling Thunder leaves town.

    • AKA

honestly? shootings in arlington are pretty rare, period. this month i swear was a fluke with this and the random north bedford shooting.

  • Roquer

I give up, what on earth are ‘bullet casings’? I’ve heard of bullet jackets, and empty cases, but bullet casings? That some new term straight out of CSI?

  • Has the case been solved? It’s 5 months already since the shoot out.
