(Updated on 8/3/12) A Microsoft Store location is opening in Pentagon City mall next month and the company is bringing in some star power to help mark the occasion.

The store — which sells Microsoft products like software, gaming devices and phones — is officially opening at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 9. A grand opening ceremony that morning will be followed up with a Microsoft Kinect demonstration by Washington Wizards point guard John Wall at 6:00 p.m., and with an even grander event on Saturday, August 11, featuring a performance by the band Weezer.

The concert will take place at the mall Warner Theater at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, according to a company rep.

In addition to the rock concert and basketball star, Microsoft will be donating $1 million in software to “local organizations that help create opportunities for local youth” at the grand opening.

There are 20 Microsoft Stores across the country, with another 10 that are listed as “opening soon.” According to a press release, the Microsoft Store offers the following:

  • “A curated assortment of products, including Windows 7 PCs, Windows Phones, Kinect for Xbox 360, Office 2010 and more.”
  • “A range of tech trainings, business-ready PCs, phones and more.”
  • “Community organizations are regularly hosted in the theater space and the employees are out in the community supporting local causes.”
  • “Through a partnership with Skinit, customers can show off their personal style and design their own lids and skins for laptops, phones and Xbox.”

  • UhOh

Is this going to be in the actual store or somewhere else in the mall? If it’s in the store then this is going to be a complete mess. It’ll be a mess either way I suppose.

    • Jeff

It’s Microsoft, so of course it will be a complete mess

      • SomeGuy

        Can you elaborate?

        • Jeff

Sure – Vista, Zune, Kin (or all windows phones)… or do you want links to articles?

          • SomeGuy

In other words, not everything out of Redmond is a hit? I agree. But Kinect, Xbox360, and Windows 7 have been very well received. And the popularity of their products probably doesn’t directly correlate to their ability to organize an event. So for those reasons, I still don’t follow your assumption that “of course it will be a complete mess.”

But you were probably just Microsoft bashing.

          • Jeff

Yes, I was. And I’ve provided evidence to back it up. Now run along, Mr Microsoft Employee, and correct everyone else on this thread.

          • drax

Everyone who disagrees with you must be paid by someone to disagree, huh?

          • Jim

Your evidence is obsolete. Get your head out of Jobs’ dead ass and brush up on tech news.

          • Jeff

What’s obsolete Jim? Vista was killed in 2009, the Kin in 2010 and the Zune in 2011. Do you need a 2012 failure? Okay, how about Bing, which was supposed to increase Microsoft’s share of the search but barely moved the needle more than a point or two in the past 3 years.

Or the new windows phone? Merely a blip in the competition between iOS and Android.

And I didn’t even have to be rude enough to invoke dead people to make my point, Jim.

          • drax

            Nerd fight!

          • Jeff

And don’t forget to ask how often they disinfect their stores. We know what is important to you.

          • Dave

            Is that you J Coles?

  • James Moron

“You used to play 10-20,000 seat venues. You’re now playing the opening of a Microsoft store in a mall. Does that mean your popularity is waning?”

“No, our appeal is becoming more selective.”

    • This one goes to 11…

      Puppet Show and Weezer?

  • NoVapologist

It’s Weezer. It’s not like it’s Justin Bieber.

  • Wayne

Very cool! I’ll make sure to snap some pics w/ my iPhone!

  • Aaron

Ewwww, Weezer and JWall, how can you stoop so low as to support Microsoft products? They’re like buses — for poor people who aren’t cool. You should be backing Apple products and streetcars!

    • B Walsh

I am offended by your implication that users of Apple products would favor the streetcar.

    • Smellmer

h\How can Microsoft stoop so low as to support Weezer?

  • YTK

    Weee! Weee! Weeezer!!!

  • Tickets

Any word on how to get tickets? Or will it be a first-come, first-served?

    • As far as we can tell, it’s a free concert that’s open to the public.

      • neutrino

        Isn’t we just you?

        • PCity

          Aren’t we all just ourselves?

    • According to spokesman Zachary Buck:

“The first customers in line on grand opening morning will receive two premier viewing tickets to the performance and have a chance to meet Weezer and receive an autograph / photo with them after the show. Additional general admission tickets will be given out while supplies last.”

  • Dezlboy

I’m sure he’s a great guy, but is John Wall doing himself a favor by shilling for Microsoft? Seriously. Microsoft?

  • Noid

“If you want to destroy my computer/give me Windows 7, ’cause I can’t walk away.”

Is it just me, or is “curated” being wantonly overused these days? *Of course* the store’s selection is carefully chosen and monitored. It’s not a flea market.

  • Westover05

    Puppet Show and Spinal Tap

  • John

Wow. So this is the only way to get people to a microsoft store opening.

    • OddNumber

Is there something wrong with promoting the opening of a new store? I think your average person isn’t going to run out to check out the new [insert random store name] store at the mall unless there is some really great reason. I wouldn’t go to an Apple store opening either unless they pulled some similarly over the top publicity stunt.

      • Omniferrous

That’s precisely why this is so hilarious. Apple store openings attract lines of people that go down the street and around the block. And they don’t use any sort of gimmick or stunt. People just want to go.

Microsoft needs a flashy gimmick to get people in the door. How sad for them.

PS. I don’t care much for either Apple or Microsoft, and don’t use either of their products.

  • JohnB2

Let’s hope they handle this better than the sneaker thing where they only had the one security guard for hundreds of people.

    • Jeff

I don’t think you have to worry about a large crowd at at Microsoft store.

  • John Fontain

What would make sense is if someone with press credentials got into the event and live streamed it to their website for viewers to watch. All in the name of “news” of course.

    • darsasx

      Only if they used flash.

  • Michael

Microsoft is the best company ever! You guys are all crazy!

•0xC0000005: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION indicates that a memory access violation occurred.

    • b0rk

If nobody else gets that, I say bravo sir. BSOD will rear its ugly head on opening day.

  • jason schwartzman

You poor fools – Joel Hodghson is CLEARLY the superior Mystery Science Theater 3000 host – I’ll bet you a–holes all prefer Mike!

  • Mc

Wow, Windows 7, now available in Pentagon City

    • Omniferrous

No, it’s so much more – they’ll also have Office 2010 there. Oh Yeah!! I can’t wait to go to the mall with my friends and create an Excel Spreadsheet!

  • Glen Carlyn NOW

Remind me again what Apple did for the opening of their store??? All you need to get from this article is:
    1. “Free Weezer concert at the PCM 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11”.

  • TJ

Haters gonna hate. And by “haters”, I mean hipster Apple fanbois.

  • b0rk

So they’re opening another Best Buy?

    • Omniferrous

No, this one will be much better. When Windows crashes, and you’re trying to decide between A) reboot or B) re-install Windows, you’ll have experts that can help you make the right decision.

  • Cyrus

    Weezer lyrics changed to…

    You’ve got your tweet pics
    I’ve got my hash tag…

  • EPinBC

Microsoft included Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” video on the installation CD for Windows 95 to show off, I guess, its multimedia capabilities. You had to dig to find it but it is a great video. That was my introduction to Weezer.

  • windows 7 is pretty cool, actually. and i’m an apple fanboy for sure.

    weezer sux, though.

    • Arlingtonian

I used to love them, but their last few albums have really sucked. In fact I think the blue album and Pinkerton are the only ones I listen to straight through every time.

  • J G

Weezer just played Cisco Live in San Diego, and now they’re playing for Microsoft? Tech sluts.

  • bj3k

Is Weezer going to play ARlington and not include matt sharp? he is a native. can’t play the ARlandria without Sharp.
