Marymount ‘Blue Goose’ Will Be Demolished — Marymount University’s distinctive but aging “Blue Goose” building at the corner of N. Glebe Road and N. Fairfax Drive in Ballston is set to be demolished and redeveloped. The actual demolition is still “a few years away,” according to a school spokeswoman, but the planning process is now getting started. [Arlington Mercury]

Metro to Miss Cell Phone Deadline — Tomorrow is the deadline set by Congress for Metro to have all of its underground tunnels and stations wired for cell phone service. The agency will miss the deadline and doesn’t expect to meet the mandate until the end of 2015. [Washington Examiner]

  • Safe House Blues

No more Blue Goose? Does the CIA know about this?

    • Julie

I remember from this building went up when I was a kid. It was the tallest building around there at the time and I thought is was SO beautiful. I never heard the “Blue Goose” name before, though–origin?

  • Arlington Cat

I remember when they built the Blue Goose, it was groovy.

    • Josh S

So it dates from the 60s? Just curious.

It would certainly be a huge change to the Ballston landscape.

      • CrystalMikey

        Good riddance!

      • Julie

1960s–was part of the Social Security Administation.

      • Loocy

But if you’ve lived here since it was built in the 1960s you still think of it as “that ugly blue building in front of the bowling alley”. Never heard anything about a goose.

        • Observer

I always assumed the Blue Goose name was a play on the Spruce Goose, a pejorative name given to Howard Hughes’ giant wooden aircraft prototype.

  • Mike

I noticed that at the Ballston metro/bus area they installed wooden dividing blocks onto all of the benches. I assume this is to prevent people from sleeping on the benches. Any other news on this?

    • DCBuff

Actually, this is usually done to prevent skateboarders from using the benches for their tricks. But yes, it prevents sleeping too.

  • 350sbc

3 more years to complete the cell service when it was supposed to be done tomorrow? SRSLY? Whoever was in charge of that project should be fired and stoned for their lack of intelligence.

    • Julie

      Yeah–Social Security Administration offices.

      • Julie

        Sorry–posted in wrong place.

    • Dude

      ” and stoned ”

Why do you think that it is taking so long dude…just chill !!!

  • barryballston

when the blue goose is gone, what will be the ugliest building in arlington?

    • malaka

Cheese cake factory. Looks like a Bhagdad Brothel.

      • SomeGuy

        Does Baghdad have brothels?

        • drax

I don’t know, but if they did, I’ll bet they’d look just like the Cheescake Factory.

    • pick a building in crystal city, any one

    • Observer

You don’t have to look far: the apartment building between Welburn Sq. and Wilson.

    • Chris Slatt

My vote is the AT&T building on the corner of Walter Reed Dr and 9th St S.

  • Ben

Ha – I pointed this out 5+ months ago on here when I pointed out nothing has happened since 2009 and got flamed because they “still had a few months left.”

    Metro: Behind and over budget.

  • Curious

Without the Blue Goose parking lot, where will the bikers gather for Rolling Thunder?

    • drax

I suggest they gather in front of the homes of people who whine when others complain about the noise.

      • Observer

They wouldn’t mind. That’s why they don’t whine about the noise in the first place.

        • drax

No, they would mind alot. They just don’t care because now it’s in front of someone else’s house instead of theirs.

          • Observer

I think you’ve confused yourself about who actually whines about the noise.

          • drax

No I haven’t. I was very clear. You should read what I said. You are the confused one.

          • Observer

I can’t wait until they come back. So much whining!

          • nom de guerre

^this^ I love it when he whines.

  • SomeGuy
  • LostDogYummy

    Ayers Hardware for the pic?

    • CrystalMikey

Nope, says the pic is from a Giant.

  • LifeorLiberty

oh there are still contenders for Ballston’s ugliest building…the Tower Villas ( of soviet prague ) and that office under renovations on Fairfax across from old Caribbean Breezes..

since all the ‘old’ buildings around here are from the 60 -70’s, they don’t have much charm or style…at least some of the new ones are making attempts.
but the neighborhood is still marching toward total Disney-fication

    • Uh

Why is Hyde Park never mentioned as the ugliest building?

      • Mike

Because some of us have no idea what building that name refers to. I generally don’t know buildings by their name. If you say “that big ugly POS at the corner of __ and __,” then I may know what you mean.

    • curious george

Except TV is in Virginia Square.

I would nominate the building that has the Alta Vista condos in it. Ever time I see it my inner Sauron stirs.

  • Ian

Maybe the Blue Goose can be the location of next years Artomatic?

  • Mc

A real opportunity to redevelop Blue Goose property, especially with a good developer such as has been engaged. Hope Marymount will be able to enhance their offering attractiveness to area residents in the process. Glebe is slowly gaining its own identity.
