The nominees have been announced and the voting has begun for the 2012 ABBIE Awards.

The ABBIES recognize “Arlington’s best businesses” in 17 different categories. Businesses were nominated by residents and the winning businesses will be chosen by popular vote.

Voting will take place through Nov. 9. The winners will be announced at the County Board meeting on Nov. 27. Last year’s winners can be found here.

ARLnow.com is one of the nominees this year, in a new “Best Online/Social Media Presence” category. A complete list of categories and nominees can be found below.

Done. Once again, I voted for ArlNow for Arlington’s Best Online/Social Media Presence.

    • Thanks!

    • drax

ArlNow is quite the upstart. 😉

    • 1RLI

      kiss a$$

  • Chris B

This year I found out about ARLnow.com. Quick, interesting, frequently updated, and usually pretty well written. The snarky commenters are a bonus 🙂

Definitely a great resource for Arlington. Keep it up guys.

    • Thank you!

    • YTK

The best place in Arlington to go Snark Fishing — Keep up the good work ArlNow !!!!

    • sunflower

+++++++ for the snark…….makes my day!

  • meh..

Is it just me….or does this look almost exactly like last years list? And the year before that?

    • Deadite

      Why wouldn’t it?

      • AH

Did someone forget to replace all the businesses this year?

    • Not all the businesses! I’m thrilled to have my massage practice nominated for two ABBIES this year!

If you think the same businesses keep showing up, why not nominate your favorites next year?

  • Hokie

I think it’s kind of a sham that Trader Joe’s is on the list for Arlington’s best new business compared to the others that are on there.

  • BurritoLover

    Where’s Pedro and Vinny?

    • DrTchock

      What about Arlington’s Best Diners?
      Bob and Ediths

      • YTK

I LOVE that place– even more so since the cigarette smoke went missing from the menu

  • South Awwlington

    lol at the Artisphere nomination.

    • YTK

That was just a token gesture of recognition to a White Elephant.

  • South Awwlington

Is Arlington defined as .5 mile from Orange Line stations only? You would think so from the nominations as 90%+ are from the corridor and almost entirely neglects other parts of the County.

    • Ralph

Eh, are there other parts of Arlington?

      • Ziv

Ralph, there is a huge chunk of terra incognita on the south side of the Great Wall of Arlington, but to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever crossed the wall and made it back alive.

        • The Dark Side

It is just beyond the “event horizon” at Rte 50.

They have indeed made it back but not in a recognizable form.

They sit and stare blankly muttering, “Oh the horror, the horror….”

  • What about best local viral video? State Farm South Arlington has got that one in the bag.

    • SomeGuy

      Thank you for that.

    • drax

This is either the worst ad ever, or the best, or both at the same time.

      • It’s supposed to be bad, think SNL Lazer Cats.

      • YTK

        Yes, it is.

    • YTK

Is it live, or is it Memorex?

  • Dood

I wish they would allow write-ins

  • SHLady

I voted for ARLnow too. thanks for your work!

    • YTK

Me too, even tho you blocked my innocuous, far-less-than-R-Rated (compared with what sometimes gets and STAYS on this forum) comment once.

      • YTK

“(compared with what sometimes gets and STAYS on this forum) ” as in — lookit what someone wrote about the Bocce balls!! (huuh!! Shocking!!!)

  • Cletus Van Damme

I love you ARLNow. Don’t ever leave me.

  • Arlington Cat

“ARLnow.com is one of the nominees this year, in a new “Best Online/Social Media.”

I don’t think you will get Trev’s vote.

    • JamesE

      That goes to “Best Garlic”

  • SomeGuy

We desperately need annual commenter superlatives awards here on ArlNow.

    Example categories:
    * Most argumentative commenter
    * Most consistently brilliant and insightful commenter (too self-serving of me?)
    * Most likely to make a non-political story political (awarded to both red side and blue side representatives)
    * Etc.

I will leave it to the other commenters to think of more imaginative ones.

    • John Fontain

Most likely to complain about government spending.
Most likely to respond with a non sequitur.
Most likely to comment with a long ago worn out joke.

    • Trish

      * Most likely to tie in the streetcar debate into any and every topic, however seemingly unrelated that topic may be from the streetcar debate.

  • Larchmont

Arlington’s Best Online/Social Media Presence? Was this rigged? Not that I wouldn’t vote for ARLNOW anyway, but Lava Barre? They don’t even have a Twitter account. Click2Mail? Looks like a great service but how many Arlingtonians actually use it? I had to look them up. Arlington Public Library? Even their article about ARLNOW got 0 reader comments.

    • YTK

I LOOOVE the Arlington Public Lbrary!! Well, maybe except for some of the stiff-necks I have consistently encountered behind the Official Desk at one and ONLY one of the (think LAARGE and open quite often) Arlington Libraries

      • Larchmont

Oh we love it too and visit the Westover branch quite often, as well as the large one. Just questioning their online/social media presence. They are a much better family friendly spot.

    • CWalters

Lava Barre’s Twitter account is http://www.twitter.com/lavabarre

  • OldYeller

Thumbs up for District Taco! Huge success in the past year in a strip where only Bray & Scarff seem to be able to hold things down. I wonder if they’d been as successful if they’d bought the building next door that is apparently cursed.

Boo on Lost Dog. Call me cranky, but it’s still the only place where I get substandard service, mediocre food and a big bill every time I go. And how many years do I have to live here before someone in there recognizes me and greets me like the neighbor I am? It’s been 15 so far.

    • Glebe Roader

You don’t like the food, the service or the price, but you’ve been going for 15 years? And, you want to be greeted with, “NORM” when you walk in? I think I *will* call you Cranky.

      • OldYeller

I know, I know. But the kids like the place and I relent. I assure you though, that I am perfectly sunny whenever I go in, born optimist that I am, and come out shaking my head each time.

      • Yogi Berra

“No one goes there any more, it’s too crowded”

  • CrystalMikey

    Done and done.

  • Bob

How did Lava Barre get nominated so many times? I mean it’s great, but it seems like overkill. Especially since Revolve isn’t even on there once!

  • wut

Why no Crossfit gyms on the workout list???

  • wut

my bad. I guess I meant boxes.

  • Natitude

    When’s HH?

  • KalashniKEV

    A&C- Courthouse Movie Theater
    BBR- Pho 75
    ABB- Apple Store
    BBr- Cheesecake
    BBL- Ray’s to the Third

…should I keep going? Why are none of these on the list?!?

  • NVAC artist

Vote for Northern Virginia Art Center! We’re in Crystal City, NOT on the orange line!

  • Rick

Rather surprised the library didn’t make best brunch or best dessert…

  • P.D.

I wonder what makes a business “new” on this list. I had thought that Curious Grape was around for three years or more; is that really “new”? Of course, they moved to a new location by Carlyle from around the corner, so could that be why it’s new? Confused.

  • MissKittenCat

Bayou Bakery is not nominated for Arlington’s best bakery but nominated in other categories. no Pedro and Vinny’s or El Pollo Rico Very Confused:S
