Courthouse Road bridge over Route 50

(Updated at 2:15 p.m.) The heavily-used Courthouse Road bridge, which connects Courthouse with eastbound Route 50, will be torn down in two weeks.

The bridge is expected to close on Friday, Jan. 25. VDOT is planning to block and reroute westbound I-50 in the Courthouse area from Jan. 26-27 to allow for the bridge demolition work. That weekend, westbound traffic will be directed around the closure via 14th Street, Wilson Boulevard, Washington Boulevard and 10th Street.

From Jan. 25 to late August, when construction of a new Courthouse Road bridge is expected to wrap up, drivers trying to get from eastbound Route 50 to Courthouse will have to drive past the former bridge and instead take the N. Queen/Rhodes Street bridge, turning left on 14th Street to eventually reach Courthouse Road.

The bridge demolition is part of the $39 million Route 50/Courthouse Road interchange project. The project is scheduled for completion in October.

Wow pershing is really going to suck.

    • A-Town

There are always tons of police on Pershing enforcing the 25 MPH speed limit.

      • Arlcommuter

I’m there twice a day during rush hour and the police presence has dwindled significantly since they first closed the 10th St ramp. Also, people pulling out onto 50 E from Pershing constantly ignore the fact that only the left lane is supposed to turn left. The right lane is for going right or straight into Fort Myer. Going to be an accident sooner or later.

        • lyon parker

It used to be both lanes turned left in the morning rush hour…has that changed? It would seem a ridiculously inopportune time to make that change with all the increased traffic volume due to this detour.

ARLnow headline from 2016: “New Courthouse Road Bridge Finally Set to Open”

    • Sebastian Melmoth

that’d be funny if it didn’t seem highly possible.

  • B22201

The freshly paved road heading towards DC is already screwed up once again. Hopefully the paving from a few weeks ago was just a temporary thing to cover up the huge holes and they’ll repave again.

  • Paul

Congrats VDOT. You’re managed to simultaneously screw up both of my possible routes to/from work: Rt 50 and Washington Blvd. You’d have thought that the Columbia Pike bridge could have waited until the 10th St/ Courthouse Rd. project was finished.

    • novasteve

I say we handcuff ourselves to the bridge. I really miss my 10th street bridge.

      • Yup

I miss that exit ramp onto 10th too. What a mess 🙁

    • Translation

Me me me me me me me me me wahhh.

      • Buckingham Beauty

I don’t think it’s whining. I’m sure there are a lot of people whose commutes are messed up because of multiple routes being under construction. I’m glad I’m not one of them, but I feel for those in that situation. Stinks royally.

      • Deadite

I translate that to mean you don’t live in the neighborhood. In which case, shut your mouth.

    • CourthouseChris

Reroute. Adapt. What is so hard about this?

      • Yup

The fact that they went from 3 on/offs for 50, to 1. And it will remain like this for months. I don’t use 50 that much but I can see what a heartache for people, and the traffic situation, in Arlington. This is going to create a major mess

      • Deadite

If you live in Courthouse as your name suggests you should realize the clusterfu** this is going to be with two consecutive bridges knocked out. Also, isn’t Fairfax drive still closed down?

        • C-Hizouse

When fairfax reopens—at least the portion that used to connect to CourtHouse Rd, will no longer connect to CourtHouse Rd—that is going to be sealed off.

          • Deadite

            Wow, that’s more bad news.

      • CW

Yeah chief it’s the rerouting that everyone’s complaining about. They took away options A, B, and C all at once.

        • Cyrus

          Yeah Chief!

        • CourthouseChris

Good thing options D through Z remain. People are whining like it’s the only bridge out of town.

  • Novanglus

“The exact detour has not yet been published.”

Yes it has — you attached the map to the article. It’s the dashed black line.

  • Will

When is the 10th Street Bridge expected to re-open? I feel like it’s been under construction forever, yet I have yet to notice any progress even being made.

    • Yup

      Fall 2013.

  • novasteve

I’m gonna miss the architecture of the bridges they knock down. They look some art deco/NJ/Empire state building like. I liked the look, the new stuff is going to be hideous.

    • JB

It’s like they design them to be lame. Only douchebags are going to use the new bridge.

  • Deadite

Why don’t they wait on this until AFTER the 10th street bridge has been replaced? Is that too much to ask?

    • barelyelite

Seriously. What the hell are they thinking?

  • Danville Mayor

The project WAS supposed to be finished in October… BUT… VDOT quietly announced that it will be at least until June 2014 before the project is complete.

Next time, hire a contractor who knows what they are doing and will work according to the schedule.

And yes, Pershing Drive will be a disaster for about 15 more months.

    • novasteve

I’m sure those people will be thrilled who are moving into that new apartment that replaced my beloved Royal lee.

    • Deadite

Pershing and Barton are about to get WORKED.

      • novasteve

        CRY. I’m double screwed.

        • bemused bystander

Another reason to move somewhere else?

  • Carmen

I did not move far enough away from Courthouse Road!

  • Tom

Wow, did anyone involved think the logistics through? The side streets north and south are going to be nuts. Plus some of these detour streets in Courthouse are closed half of Saturday because of farmers markets and junky art fair near the CVS. Plus that detour shown for the week of January 25-27 is very messy: there is no green arrow turning left from Washington Blvd to 10th Street east bound. It’s very hard to do.
